A fine performance from a youthful Baptist
side saw them gain an excellent win away at a now relegated Burwash. Following
two games without a goal and still missing a number of seasoned 1st
team regulars the scoreline was as encouraging as the performances from a
couple of young Battle players. The performance itself was enough to beat a
fairly disgruntled Burwash side and in actual fact Battle never really had to
get out of second gear but young Ollie Jeffs and Max Sztyber looked confident
and assured in their respective positions in the middle of midfield and
defence.
The team as a whole played well, bolstered
by the inclusion of new goalkeeper Andy Poulter who
brought a lot of experience and a bit more volume to keep the back line on
their toes. The game was dead and buried by half time, mainly thanks to the set
pieces of Owen Davies who set up the first two goals. The first rebounded in
off Bryan Leggett who had failed to make contact with the first cross whilst
the second was put on a plate for Alan Cowley to head home from close range.
Max Sztyber grabbed his first goal after some pinball action from an Alan
Cowley free kick saw the ball drop at his feet. Other chances came and went and
except for the first exchanges of the game, Battle were
always in the ascendancy.
The second half was less exciting as playing
down the slope seemed to hamper Battle, and perhaps some complacency at the
scoreline set in. The performance was good enough and the two teams exchanged
well taken penalties, both given for handball, to see the final scoreline
finish 4-1 in favour of Battle.
