Battle were keen to
bounce back from their disastrous weekend result as the end of a highly
topsy-turvy season drew close. Cranbrook were the
visitors, and as the team holding up the table, confidence in the Battle camp
was high. However, some improved results recently from the away side was enough to dispel any room for complacency and the teams
took to the field on a balmy evening at the ever bobbly
Battle rec.
From the offset Cranbrook set out to disrupt
their opponents, favouring rash tackles and abusive language over the hard work
and honest football favoured by the hosts. Chances were at a premium, but
Battle had the best of them – Dom Fowler twice coming close during one-on-ones
as well as some great set-pieces that couldn’t quite find the net. Cranbrook were restricted on the whole to long range, and at times
quite wild, attempts.
The second half was another close affair,
with Cranbrook probably shaving the initial period until they proved why they
are bottom. Needlessly they let their tempers get the better of them and some
highly unsavoury clashes meant the game unfortunately began to peter out.
Battle did come close from some more set pieces, Alan Cowley and Dave Mills
proving especially dangerous whilst Gary Walsh brought the crowd to life when a
cheeky little lob from the edge of the area dropped just over. The Cranbrook
keeper also made some good saves as a frustrated Battle were
denied three points.
