Following a great win the week before,
Battle were looking to build some momentum and there was no better place to
begin than away at local rivals and league leaders Catsfield. The reverse
fixture a few weeks earlier had been a belter and
Battle wanted some revenge for the late Catsfield winner.
The conditions could not have been more
different on a belting hot day and a solid pitch and both teams found it
difficult to settle early on a pitch that made sure good passing was at a
premium. However, thanks to a lot of hard work and closing down, Battle eased
themselves into the match and it was them that struck the first blow. An Owen
Davies corner finally found itself a the feet of
Stuart Batchelor who swept it home well from about 8 yards. It was the tireless
work of the ageless Stuart Batchelor and Andy Mills in the centre that allowed
Battle to remain in the ascendancy and two quick goals close to half time
effectively ended the tie. The first if
those was wonderfully created by Bryan Leggett who left the full back standing
down the right before finding Tom Frere-Smith in the centre who
turned and clinically finished in the bottom corner. Bryan then grabbed one
himself as he two found the bottom corner of the net following a great team
build up.
AS the teams turned round Catsfield came out
with more vigour and quickly grabbed themselves a
goal. A fine cross from the left was well headed in by Shaun Smith and a game
seemed back on again. Bryan Leggett soon put pay to that however with his
second and Battle continued to press now they knew the game was safe. A late
and scrappy consolation was all that the league leaders could muster as Battle
notched up their second win in a row thanks to a thoroughly satisfying
performance based on hard-work and some clinical finishing.
