Following a week off, the Baptists were looking
to generate some upward momentum in division 3 and build on their victory from
two weeks ago. The newly formed Eastbourne Dynamos were the visitors and it was
them that had much of the early ball. There was very little sting however and
as Battle got themselves into the game in an attacking
sense, Gary Walsh charged down the young keeper’s clearance and joyfully
watched the ball rebound into the net. Very soon Battle doubled their lead
after Dom Fowler, as hard working as ever on his first start of the season,
brilliantly made his way to the bye-line before cutting it back across goal
where Pete Cooper was ready and waiting to prod the ball over the line.
After shipping 9 goals last week, no-one
would have been surprised to see Eastbourne’s heads drop but credit where it’s
due they rallied and well and a fine long range drive from their skipper, Mark Likeman, brought them right back into the game on about the
half hour mark. This was just moments after Pete Cooper had the Eastbourne bar
at the other end. The remainder of the half was hard fought, Dom Fowler saw a
great penalty claim waved away but it was the Eastbourne keeper that was the
busier of the two.
The second half started in much the same
way, Eastbourne’s early possession giving way to sustained battle pressure but
they couldn’t find the telling third goal to kill the game off. Gary Walsh came
close with two headers from Adam Johnson corners and came even closer when he
saw a lob from the edge of the area drop agonisingly over the crossbar. A cross
from open-play by Johnson gave Fowler an opening and he was unlucky to steer
the ball wide from about 8 yards. As their defence tired Walsh again nipped in
to steal the ball but this time his shot could only find the keeper.
Eastbourne rarely threatened in the second
half and the reshuffled Battle defence coped well, glad to have Gary Williams
back in the centre along side the excellent Darrell Hartley, while Dave Mills
and Paul Ford ensured nothing came down the flanks. Adam Johnson thrived in his
new role on the left wing while Pete Cooper was as good as ever swapped to the
right. Alan Cowley and Andy Mills battled hard in the centre of midfield while
Gary Walsh and Dom Fowler were always a threat up front.
