The first team’s frustrations continued to
grow in this K&P Motoring World Cup match against a high-flying Eastbourne
side. Confidence in the side remains high but early goals really put the
pressure on and Battle conceded another one here after a well-taken free kick
was glanced into the net from 10 yards out. As it always seems to do, this
rallied the Baptists who enjoyed some good possession only to find the
Eastbourne keeper in magnificent form, flinging himself
left, right and centre at every shot and cross that Battle could muster.
The telling blow really came 10 minutes
before half time after another in a series of silly free kicks was conceded on
the edge of the area. As the ball was whipped in Battle allowed it to drop to
shin height and the Eastbourne player skilfully volleyed it home. Adam Johnson
and Dom Fowler were full of running up front while Pete Cooper and Dave Mills
looked continually threatening down the wings. Unfortunately the final ball was
not there for Battle and the game was wrapped up halfway through the second
half as the Eastbourne forward finished clinically from a one-on-one with
keeper Lewis. Battle ended the game with a lot of pride however after a last 15
minutes in which they played their best football of the season. Cowley and Andy
Mills finally saw some ball in midfield and with Owen Davies and Paul Rook
supporting the wingers Battle created some great chances. It was of course too
little too late but they can take some confidence from their final flourishes.
