Battle Baptist seconds were cruelly denied all three points after a series of controversial refereeing decisions allowed Herstmonceux to claim an undeserved draw.

The match started with two goals in the first four minutes. Latching onto a measured flick by David Ndunduma, Dom Fowler steadied himself before crashed a stunning volley into the back of the net. The lead did not last long though as a ball into the box came off the hand of captain Chris Mammone and the penalty was dispatched comfortably by Bruce Matthews.

Despite making the early running, the away side found themselves behind when a free kick was swung in and Ollie Jeffs diverted it past his own goalkeeper. On 27 minutes the Baptists thought they had levelled when Ndunduma sent a towering header low into the corner from a Dale Scowen free kick. The linesman pulled him up for offside however and the goal was chalked off.

Two minutes later though the same two players linked up again to score an equaliser that this time stood, as a smart one two on the edge of the box released Scowen to roll the ball past the keeper from ten yards.

The away side were denied a clear penalty when a handball by a Herstmonceux defender was waved away by the referee, before good saves by the home keeper from both Fowler and Ndunduma ensured the sides went into the break level.

After brief refreshment at half time, both sides emerged to the second 45 and within a minute a long range Scowen effort was cleared off the line. Steve Chapman then sent a stinging volley from twenty yards straight at the keeper, before Herstmonceux hit back with a volley that hit the bar.

Matt Lee had two efforts blocked before the men in orange got a third goal on 67 minutes when Ndunduma latched onto a through ball and, despite pulling his hamstring in the chase, retained his composure to finish past the keeper. Ndunduma then had to go off and was replaced by Stuart Calderwood, with Chapman moving upfront. This lasted twenty minutes until Chapman also succumbed to a hamstring strain and was replaced by Gordon Lee.

Both substitutes had chances to put the game beyond the home side before a dramatic finish as first the referee allowed 7 minutes of injury time for no discernable reason, then he gave a penalty in the last of those minutes when the Herstmonceux striker clearly ran straight into Baptists keeper Simon Cutler, who had already got to the ball. The intervention of the linesman did not sway the referee and, despite protests from those on the pitch and supporters watching on, Matthews again dispatched the penalty to end the game 3-3.
