Perfect playing
conditions suited the attacking talents of the Baptists seconds as another high
scoring match ended with victory over mid-table Magham Down.
A sluggish start saw
the Baptists concede the early initiative as hesitant defending led to a goal
against in the first ten minutes. However within five minutes Battle had
equalised when David Ndunduma ran through the middle and calmly took the ball
around the keeper. This goal was then quickly replicated on the quarter hour
mark when David gave the home side the lead.
Battle continued to
keep the pressure up but in the 27th minute Magham Down equalised in
controversial circumstances. A bouncing ball was travelling safely through to
Tim Nunn in the Battle goal when the Magham forward, Matt Batehup,
used his hand to blatantly punch the ball over Nunn and into the back of the
net. The referee missed the incident and, despite the home side’s protests,
allowed the goal. The fact the referee missed such an obvious offence was
disappointing, but the actions of the Magham Down player, in first committing
the offence, then refusing to own up to it, only served to spur the Baptists
on.
David completed his
hat-trick on the 33rd minute with a Zola-esque
flick at the near post and this was followed ten minutes later with the fourth
goal after his cross was deflected into his own net by one of the Magham Down
defenders. After an action-packed first half Battle entered
the interval with a two-goal cushion.
Battle continued to
keep the pressure up when the game restarted and unleashed a variety of efforts
on the Magham goal, most notably a thundering right-foot volley from Dom Fowler
that cannoned off the crossbar. Dale Scowen, who had gone agonisingly close
with a trademark long-range free kick, made it five when he was played in by David
and expertly chipped the goalkeeper from 18 yards.
This pressure
continued until Magham Down broke down the defence just past the hour to notch
up their third goal, but only after they had been thwarted twice by two great
saves by Tim in the Baptist goal. A swift move down the right ended with Magham
scoring their fourth in the 75th minute.
Two minutes later it
looked like Magham could get the equaliser when a free kick was awarded for a
back pass only two yards from the goal. However Magham felt the pressure of the
situation and the ball was rocketed over the crossbar. Magham again came close
when a superb goal-line clearance from Loksan stopped a header sneaking under
the cross bar.
Battle decided
attack was the best form of defence and threw on another striker in place of a
defender. This paid dividends when Battle sealed the game after substitute Jake
scored in the 85th minute. David wrapped it up by scoring his fourth of the day
in injury time to make the final result 7:4.
