In conditions that
were the complete opposite of the glorious sunshine of the last few weeks the
Baptists slipped to a disappointing away defeat on Bexhill Road.
Playing the side
only two places above them in the league and coming into the game having
scoring 14 goals in their last two games confidence was high in the away
dressing room. However the high winds and second half rain meant the Battle
side were unable to utilise their attacking talents.
Having lost the toss
and been forced to play into the wind it soon became obvious the first half
would be a damage limitation exercise before launching a second half comeback.
Resolute defending in the first twenty minutes resulted in only two goals
conceded, one direct from a corner on the quarter hour and the other five
minutes later following a break down the middle when the dangerous Shane Ryan
was afforded too much time and space.
To their credit, the
Baptists fought back with Jake Wilkinson and David Ndunduma both going close
before a blatant handball on the goal line from a goal-bound Wilkinson effort
was punished only with a penalty. The keeper saved Dale Scowen’s
effort and the home side further punished the visitors when another corner was
drilled in for 3-0.
As the sides turned
round the Baptists were confident of turning round the deficit but a mixture of
naïve play and a change in the conditions meant they never really got going.
Despite excellent
width provided by both fullbacks, the game too often consisted of a high ball
down the centre of the park which carried straight through to the opposition
keeper. To add insult to injury the Baptists where then done twice in quick
succession on the counter attack as Orington, who also hit the post from long
range, ran out worthy winners.
