A sensational
performance from Baptist seconds saw them demolish the divisional leaders away
from home.
A sun-drenched
Saturday in Sidley witnessed the men in orange upset the league form book as 5 goals
in a dominant first half sealed the match. Going in confident following a
strong return to action last week, the Baptists knew they had the chance to
surprise the opposition as recent displays have belied their lowly league
position.
The match started at
a keen pace before the first major incident when a late a high challenge on
Loksan left him with a bruised knee complete with several studmarks. After
brief treatment he returned to action in time to help out the defence as
last-man Max intercepted the ball after the Pelham forward had broken through
the backline.
Just past the
quarter hour mark the Baptists were ahead when a corner from Dale was flicked
on by Stuart at the near post and David met it at the far post. Two more goals
in the next ten minutes put the Baptists in control. First David repaid the
favour by beating his man down the right before squaring it for Stuart to force
home. Then a huge clearance from Simon fell in the Pelham half and as the
keeper came out to meet it, it was expertly lofted over his head by David.
Pelham, visibly and
audibly affected by the quickfire goals, tried to get on the scoresheet but saw
efforts well defended and narrowly fly wide. They immediately paid for those
missed chances when two goals in three minutes further stretched the Battle
side’s advantage. A throw in from the left wing was brought down by David who
laid it back for Josh to calmly drive the ball into the corner before David
sealed his hat-trick with the best goal of the day. He picked the ball up
twenty-five yards from goal and with a flash of his left boot it was flying
into the corner of the net.
There were further
chances for the Baptists to score from some scrambles from corners before Pelham
knew it wasn’t their day when the dangerous number 9 shot past Simon but the
ball came straight back off the post and into Simon’s arms.
After a brief talk
at half time to ensure everyone kept concentration and focus the sides
re-emerged to resume combat. Pelham were getting further annoyed at the path
the game was taking and bad language and dangerous tackles were starting to
become commonplace from the home side. A brief pushing match was the result of
a late challenge on Josh which regretfully saw the Baptists pick up their first
ever booking.
Pelham then picked
up further bookings for bad language before the ref let an awful challenge on
Stuart pass with just a warning. Loksan came off for Jake with Josh moving onto
the left wing before on seventy minutes Pelham got their consolation when the
referee chose to ignore the raised flag of the linesman and allow the offside
Pelham forward to run on and fire past Simon.
Jake then snatched
at two chances before Stuart Calderwood came on for Josh. The Pelham keeper
then made two excellent saves to deny the increasingly frustrated Jake before
David came off for a well-deserved rest in the last few minutes and Gordon
entered the fray to tighten things up.
The final whistle
brought a jubilant response from the Baptists who had produced a superb team
effort to perform to the level they had been threatening in the previous few
games.
