After the euphoria
of last week, the Baptists came back down to earth with a bump as three goals
in the first 30 minutes sealed their fate.
With a side
featuring eight changes from the previous week a hesitant start let in the
Peche forward after only three minutes as he had too much time in the box to
pick his spot. The men in orange were under pressure for the beginning portion
of the match and captain Chris Mammone twice saved certain goals when first
heading a dangerous inswinging corner onto his own crossbar and away with Peche
Hill forwards closing in, then clearing off his line as a goal-bound shot was
rolling in the near post.
He could do nothing
on twenty-six minutes though as a good move down the right ended with a simple
finish in front of goal.
Needing to get back
in the game, the Baptists came agonisingly close to getting on the scoresheet
when Sinhue flicked on a free kick with a backheel and it flew just past the
post with the keeper rooted to the spot. Unfortunately moments later it was
three-nil as a defensive slip let in the Peche Hill striker for a shot at an
unguarded net.
Just before
halftime, the Baptists came within inches of getting a goal as the departing
Rafa hit a snapshot from the edge of the box that the keeper just got his
finger tips to it to push it over the bar.
After regrouping at
half time a much improved second half followed. The impressive Steve Spicer
went close when bursting through on his debut, before a triple substitution
gave the team some fresh legs to try and get a consolation goal. This was not to
be though as Peche Hill pounced for a fourth twenty minutes from time as the
Baptists failed to clear the ball in defence.
Although this was
obviously not the result we wanted we should be encouraged by the way we stood
up and were counted in the second half. I have no doubts we can take Peche Hill
when we meet them in the league. Take next week’s training match seriously and
use it to build up fitness and match awareness and we will be a better side for
it.
