Three successive wins proved just beyond the
Baptist seconds as they rounded off an encouraging first season in 9th
Place.
Gale force winds and a sloping pitch in
Eastbourne made sure this was not a game for purists and it seemed it was not
just the elements against good football when star striker David Ndunduma went
over on his ankle after only ten minutes. He left the field for treatment and
bravely came back on a few minutes later, during which time Dale Scowen had
fired just wide.
Two free kicks from Scowen in the space of
two minutes both brought good saves from the White Knight keeper, before Tim
Nunn was called upon in the Baptist goal to save a low White Knight free kick.
Half time saw a reshuffle as captain Chris Mammone went off with injury to be replaced by
Loksan Harley. Despite the winds and slope now being against them, the men in
orange started with a bang and first Ndunduma could not get up high enough for
a Scowen cross, before Ndunduma had a shot blocked and Harley fired wide.
The deadlock was broken on fifty-five
minutes when good set-up play got the ball to Dom Fowler and he buried it in
the corner.
White Knight hit back and Nunn made two
excellent low saves then with ten minutes remaining Steve Chapman came on for
Fowler. With eight minutes to go White Knight equalised when a well-struck
inswinging corner went straight in, before the Baptists wasted a chance to go
back in front when Ndunduma squared the ball to Chapman despite looking the
favourite to score. Rounding off an action-packed three minutes Seb Elliott
cleared off the Baptists line before departing manager Steve Mumford came on in
the last minute.
