A great team effort enabled Battle Baptist’s
second team to get their season off to a flyer against a below strength Beulah
Baptists II at Claverham on Saturday.
Debutant Rob Usherwood opened the scoring
for the home team in the 12th minute. From a position with his back to goal he
controlled the ball with his chest and let fly with an overhead kick. His other three goals in the first half were
less spectacular but still very efficient, scoring in the 23rd, 41st
and 43rd minutes.
In the second half Battle dominated again,
Zack Smith scoring with a playful lob in the 67th minute. Usherwood
scored his fifth in the 75th minute. There were promising debuts
from Ian Rafiti and John King who both came off the bench to show strength in
depth. Although Usherwood was Man of the
Match, special mention should be given to Darrell Hartley who scored his first
goal for the club. He now has the
amazing strike-rate of 1 in 71. The Baptists will face better teams this
season, but it’s great to get the first three points on the board.
