The Baptists were pegged back in the early stages of this East Sussex League Division 2 fixture. After missing a good chance to score first and take the match by the scruff of the neck, a defensive clearance was charged down by a Northiam attacker and before the home defence could regroup the ball was in the back of the net via the boot of Kenny Deal.

Further chances were created for the home team. First Tom Frere-Smith went close to equalising, and then Gary Walsh had his goal-bound shot cleared off the line. Frustrated by their missed opportunities Battle continued to fight for good possession and Walsh thumped a shot against the upright before finally Frere-Smith levelled the scores on the stroke of half time.

Nothing changed when both teams resumed after the break as each side struggled for midfield possession. Battle were undone a second time when big centre half Jack Cooper headed Northiam into the lead for the second time from a corner kick.

Determined to set the scoreline straight and give a fair impression for their endeavour, the Battle team fought valiantly and Frere-Smith made no mistake for his second equalising goal after Dale Scowen had released a pass through a tight defensive cordon.

Looking strong in the final minutes the home team narrowly missed winning all three points when Frere-Smith cracked an angled shot that deflected off the cross bar to safety.
