Battle Baptists climbed another place
in Division 2 thanks to this point but they should have brought home all three,
conceding a penalty equaliser with just 5 minutes left on the clock.
From the start, the frozen yet dewy Maltings pitch caused problems for both teams as players
struggled to keep their footing. The home team were first to benefit when a
Baptist defender misjudged the bounce enabling Liam Sayer
to run in on goal unchallenged to open the scoring.
Equality was restored when Steve Spicer beat a shaky off side
call to slam his shot past the exposed keeper.
Kicking down the slope Battle began
to take hold of the game. Gary Walsh took down a left wing cross on his knee
and his well-guided strike from 18 yards brought off a diving save from the young
Justin Smith. Soon afterwards another chance went begging when Walsh headed
a corner down and the normally lethal Alan Cowley blasted over the bar from 6
yards. The visitors finally took the lead in the last minute of the first half
after crunching tackles by the battling duo of Dale Scowen and Ollie Jeffs in
central midfield released Dave Sitch on the right
wing. Sitch cleverly looked up and delivered an
inch-perfect pass to the near post where Walsh waited to tuck it away inside
the post.
After the break Battle looked like
sealing the win with a dominant start to the half but their hosts punished
lapses in concentration. Peasmarsh levelled when a
left wing counter attack pulled the Battle defenders around to create space for
Liam Sayer who made no mistake with his finish.
When Walsh knocked down a free kick
for captain Dale Scowen to smash his team back in front it seemed that one more
goal would have secured the win but again Peasmarsh caught
the Baptists on the hop, breaking quickly to gain a penalty when the Battle
keeper recklessly brought down the striker for a penalty, which Gavin Carey
slotted in coolly to earn his side a share of the spoils.
Another great Battle performance will
give the church based team great confidence as they go into the Christmas break
in a positive mood. With key players returning from injury in the New Year and
young players developing well, there is plenty of optimism in the team.
