A sensational hat-trick from Tom Frere-Smith helped a fast-improving Battle Baptist side topple the league leaders Beulah on Saturday.

During a nervous first twenty minutes, it was Battle who had the first meaningful effort on goal as Tom Frere-Smith lashed a free-kick goalwards. It was well saved by the keeper but clearly signalled Battle’s intent.

On the half hour mark though, Beulah showed their class. Hesitancy in the Battle defence ended with a mistake that presented a chance to Claudio Jakupi and the Beulah forward coolly rounded the keeper and slotted home. Although Battle forced numerous corners at the end of the half, the first forty-five minutes ended with the table-toppers ahead.

A resurgent Battle came out for the second half and completely dominated the rest of the game. Tom Frere-Smith got himself a goal ten minutes in as a free kick was knocked down for him to force home. On sixty-five minutes he was at it again as he latched onto a loose ball in the box and found the back of the net. The treble was completed with ten minutes left as good work down the right left him through on goal and he took his chance with aplomb. The goal signalled the withdrawal of his brother Bryn, who had worked tirelessly in support, and witnessed the entrance of player-manager Gary Walsh. Within seconds Gary had an effort that the keeper did well to turn round the post, then from the resulting corner his headed was stopped on the line.

The match finished without further incident as Battle moved up three places to make it a Baptist one-two at the top of Division 5.
