Despite missing five first team players
Battle Baptists blended youth with experience to produce a performance that
symbolised the spirit of the club.
The Baptists started quickly, with Gary
Williams heading a second minute corner goalwards and forcing the keeper to tip
it over the bar. Tom Frere-Smith was then played in but on his weaker left side
he hit his effort straight at the keeper. Before ten minutes had passed Andy
Mills got in on the act and after being played in by good work from Frere-Smith
and Dom Fowler he forced the keeper into a great save.
Frere-Smith then laid off Fowler for a first
time effort that flashed just wide, before the game settled down with the
Baptists looking more threatening but the Bodiam midfield starting to get a
stranglehold on the game. Good work from Dave Mills on the right saw Adrian
Gaylon climb for an excellent header that just went over from eight yards.
Gaylon was then involved a few minutes later in a goalmouth scramble where a
mixture of brave keeping and last-ditch defending stopped the Bodiam goal from
being breached. They could do nothing ten minutes before halftime though as the
livewire Frere-Smith broke through the middle and took his time before rifling
a right foot shot past the keeper.
The second half started with Bodiam on top
and they enjoyed the majority of possession without creating any clear-cut
chances. Chris Mammone picked up an injury ten minutes in and was replaced by
Steve Mumford. Bodiam then won a free-kick on the edge of the area and it was
curled goalwards where Simon Cutler tipped onto the bar. The resulting corner
was cleared of the near post by Mumford as the Baptists started to come under
some real pressure. Frere-Smith and Fowler looked to relieve this by occupying
the Bodiam defence but their efforts on goal failed to find the target.
Relief did come though in the form of Dave
Mills, who linked up beautifully with Frere-Smith to set himself up on the
corner of the box to drill a rasping effort into the roof of the net. Though this
looked to put the game beyond the hosts, they hit back and struck the bar at
the end of a flowing move. Fowler was then twice denied by a mixture of an
uneven pitch and some committed goalkeeping before stand-in manager Richard
Ahsam made a double substitution, bringing on Steve Chapman and debutant Luke
Miller. In the last minute Pete Cooper, now released forward into midfield,
struck a low shot from twenty yards that the keeper parried out for a corner.
The resulting corner from Miller proved to be the last action of a good
spirited game that was superbly refereed by James White.
