A rampant Battle side thrashed Bodiam on a sun soaked day
at the recreation ground. The Baptists exerted all the early pressure, and that
was nearly rewarded ten minutes in when Bryn tried a spectacular volley from 25
yards that cannoned off the bar. Bryn then latched on to an inch-perfect
through ball to confidently strike the ball past the keeper with his left foot
to open the Baptist’s account for the season. The cause was helped further when
a thunderous drive from Tom was parried away by the keeper who suffered a hand
injury in the process and had to go off the field. Tom had a strong penalty
appeal turned down before the first half ended with another Bodiam player, this
time a midfielder, leaving the field with injury.
The second half started with a bang. Captain for the day
Andy Mills crashed home the ball from the edge of the area after a corner had
only been partially cleared. Tom then got in on the act when the ball fell to
him in the box and he made no mistake. The game was now very open and numerous
opportunities were being created for the Baptists. Bryn was next to score when
he buried the ball in the corner just before the hour mark. Tom waltzed through
the defence to score number five before he was bundled over to present Owen
with a chance to score from the spot. This he did with ease and there was
enough time left for Bryn to stroke home his third and the Baptist’s seventh.
Lots of goals witnessed by lots of fans meant that this was the perfect start to the new season.
