Battle Baptists gained their ninth win in eleven games with a
dominant performance against bottom club Hastings APF. Battle made all the
early running and after ten minutes the first clear chance fell to top scorer
Tom Frere-Smith, whose shot was cleared off the line. After much frustration at
some contentious offside decisions, Tom eventually got through successfully
just past the half-hour mark and played the ball across the six-yard line to
present a simple tap-in for debutant Steve Chapman. More pressure followed, but
Battle, and Tom in particular, were denied by some committed defending and the
first half ended with the Baptists one goal up.
The second half quickly followed the pattern of the first, with
early efforts going close from Gary Walsh and Dave Mills. Both were denied by
outstanding saves from the Hastings keeper, who was having an inspired
afternoon. In the sixty-fifth minute, Tom got his goal as he finished from
close range after his first effort had again been cleared off the line. Only two
minutes later the game was over as a contest when Steve Chapman saw his
goal-bound header diverted past his own keeper by an unfortunate APF defender.
The drama was not yet over as with ten minutes left a goal line handball
resulted in a penalty to the Baptists. The referee declined to produce the
obligatory red card and the keeper again produced heroics, this time to deny
Owen Davies. A couple of late substitutions helped Battle see the game out
comfortably, and even have a blatant penalty turned down when Tom was fouled in the box. The win keeps the pressure on the leaders in Division
5.
