BBFC started slowly and after just 3
minutes Hastings Rangers scored when a corner sailed over Jamie's head into the
goal without anyone touching it.
By 15 minutes, we were in control of
the game and were causing problems for the opposition, but after 33 minutes, and
against the run of play, Hastings Rangers exploited defensive hesitance and
Mark Smith, the veteran giant finished neatly for the visitors.
We continued to play well, and were
back in the game when Stuart Batchelor lobbed a ball so high into the six
yard box that by the time it came down the Hasting keeper was dizzy and could
only parry the ball into the roof of the net.
We were awarded a penalty on the stroke of half time
as a Ranger's defender upended Tom inside the box. However,
having spoken to the Hastings linesman, the referee decided that the foul he
had seen must have been a figment of his imagination and instead gave a foul against
Tom.
After the break we continued to have
the best chances, and levelled the scores at 2-2 when Tom Frere-Smith calmly
stroked Bryn’s wonderful right wing run and cross into the bottom corner.
It looked certain that we would score
a winner. We missed several chances as the visiting defence weakened, but cruelly
it was Hasting who took the spoils when a dubious free kick was awarded 25
yards from our goal and as it was lofted into the goal mouth, the ball ricocheted
around to fall at the feet of the unmarked Hastings striker who hammered it
into the heart of the Battle goal.
