BOTH GAMES FROZEN OFF
Both of todays games have fallen victim to the freezing weather this week.
Gary Wenham declared the Claverham pitch unplayable this morning when he inspected it at 9am. In the arctic conditions and with temperatures still below zero, there is no way the pitch will recover for a 2pm KO against Bexhill Rovers.
The 1sts were due to play away at Icklesham but the pitch was deemed unfit at about 10am.
No game for the 1sts next week as a good number of the players enjoy a mid-season holiday on the French Alpine slopes in preparation for the National Christian Trophy 3rd Round tie against Sunderland based Calvery CF on 18th Feb.
The 2nd team will look to continue their New Year winning form with a home fixture against Hampden Park.

A GAME OF TWO HALVES
Northiam 75 II 0-8 BBFC II
In the end a convincing and comfortable win for the Baptists second string, but it took fully 45 minutes for them to assert themselves.
In general passing and movement were poor in the first half. Approach play was far to narrow, with the Baptist looking for a killer pass through the middle when getting the ball wide was by far the better option.
Highlight of the half came on 36 minutes. Jamie Crouch found Rob Usherwood with a perfect angled pass. Rob controlled with one touch and finished with a lob over the onrushing keeper for 1-0.
The second half saw a vastly improved performance. Jamie Crouch doubled the lead 10 minutes in with a shot from distance that squirmed under the keeper. Jacko scored two minutes later after creating space for himself inside the box.
Marcus Doyle was on now and his pace immediately started to cause problems for the tiring Northiam defenders. Almost instantly he was brought down in the box for a penalty, cooly despatched by birthday boy Ian Stonestreet.
Further goals came in quick succession. Rob Usherwood scored his second two minutes later. A second penalty on 65 minutes was converted by Leon Crouch. Rob completed his hat-trick after a drop kick from keeper Ray Pennels found him down the right. One touch took the ball into his path and he finsihed cooly with another lob past the keeper. Marcus Doyle completed the scoring with 15 minutes left to play.
This win puts as back on top of the table, but there are always lessons to be learnt as we enter February and a run of matches that could well determine the outcome of this season for us.

NO JUSTICE FOR 1STS
BBFC I 0-1 EASTBOURNE ALBERT
The first team can consider themselves more that a tadge unfortunate not to get points from the game yesterday. Playing against a team who still harbour hopes of promotion, the side played with great conviction despite missing some key players.
Gary Thomsett hit the bar after 20 minutes and the Baptists carved out other good chances to open the scoring. Matt Lee flashed a shot narrowly wide and the ever-present Adam Thompsett missed the target in a great position.
The winning goal came just four minutes before half time when a good move down the right wing resulted in a cut back for Albert to thump home from close range.
Solid defensive work by the home team meant there were very few further chances for Eastbourne and Battle ended the game disappointed that the result didn't reflect the performance.
Next week, the first travel to Icklesham confident that a similar performance is needed to win an important relegation 6-pointer.

BEXHILL PLAYER RECOVERING
Bexhill AAC II 1-1 BBFC II (match abandoned)
A terrible head injury to Bexhill defender Jamie Broocks took the shine of this closely fought cup quarter final.
It started well for the Baptists who took the lead on 15 minutes. A free kick found Lee Boyd on the edge of the area who finished with an accurate shot into the corner.
The injury happened 5 minutes into the second half. Rob Fairy attempted a high scissor kick as the ball came into the box. The defender got to the ball first and Robs momemtum saw his foot collide with Jamie Broocks head. The incident saw Rob being sent off after being booked for dangerous play and receiving a yellow card in the first half.
I have since heard that the player has suffered a broken cheek bone and concussion, but is reported to be comfortable. All at BBFC wish him well.
The game was delayed for 40 minutes as the paramedics and ambulance attended to the player.
At the re-start Bexhill pulled a goal back, but the 10 man Baptists held on to maintain parity at 90 minutes. With fading light and the referee having to leave for a pre-arranged family committment, there was no time for extra time and penalties so the game was abandoned.

TROY'S JOY AS FIRSTS SPURT TO SINK CINQUE
BBFC I 7-2 CINQUE PORTS
Having lost 5 of the squad that almost caused an upset at Langney last week, this week's side looked considerably different, yet the effort and commitment was just as high and the result justifiably rewarding.
Matt Lee showed immediate intent when his powerful shot flew over the bar inside the first minute. It wasn't long before his team took the lead when a corner resulted in a goalmouth scramble in which Adam Thomsett claimed the final touch.
Playing for the first time in a while, the new strike partnership of Tom Frere-Smith and Gary Thompsett combined well to create dangerous situations. Thompsett held his head in his hands as a fine header hit the side netting but soon Frere-Smith made it 2-0 from the spot after Adam Thompsett was fouled in the box.
Sitting comfortably fourth in the league with a 6-1-6 record, Cinque Ports looked anything but comfortable as the home side tackled harder, passed better and defended more strongly with fine performances from Dave Mills, Rob Jordan, Rob Fairy and Kieran Mayhew. By the time Tom Frere-Smith danced past a desperate tackle, ran down the left wing, and shot past the onrushing keeper to open up a 3 goal lead, Battle's superiority was impressive.
However, 'Ports were not yet finished. An uncharacteristic handling error from the otherwise impeccable Andy Poulter gave a goal back just before half time, and a converted penalty at the start of the second half brought the visitors back to within a goal.
With legs beginning to tire on the sticky surface of a heavy pitch, it was the home team that emerged the stronger approaching the last 30 minutes. To the massive relief of the home supporters Rob Fairy met a corner with full force to see his powerful header strike the net to give his side a comfort zone again, but the quality of his header was nothing compared to his 40 yard free kick that zipped through the air like a missile to hit the top corner, destroying any hopes Cinque Ports had of a comeback.
The cold, damp and heavy conditions ineviatbly took their toll as several players suffered cramp and when Gary Thompsett was replaced by substitute Troy Parsons for the last 20 minutes, eyebrows were raised. However, the youngster rose to the occasion superbly firing in a well-taken shot for Battle's sixth and his first for the Club. As the roof came off the stadium, Battle's Ballotelli celebrated in front of his adoring fans with appropriate exuberance, ensuring that both knees were muddied to the same extent.
Moments later and Troy could have notched another but his shot was scuffed past the post. It was left to the man who began the scoring, Adam Thompsett to have the fianl say with a neat nod into the net jsut before the whistle ended this wonderful afternoon.
The Baptists will be encouraged that this was the performance of a top three side looking for promotion. Whether it's just a flash in the pan or whether it's the start of an amazing recovery to avoid relegation from Division 2, will remain to be seen over the next 5 games.
But who cares anyway. The fact is that finally it all came together and that we had a really great time! Thank God.
The question everybody really wants answered is how will it be before we're allowed to forget it?...

GOOD FORM CONTINUES
Bexhill Rovers 1-2 BBFC II
Despite conceding in the first 5 minutes BBFC seconds put on a solid display, of good passing football, with grit and determination to claim all 3 points against a very good Rovers team.
On this showing, Rovers are a side that could take points off all the top sides, which makes the victory all the more satisfying.
The home side had two very skillfull and pacy forwards and were getting good early crosses into the box. It was from this source that they scored when a forward just beat keeper Pennels to the ball for a good finish.
The Baptists were enjoying good possesion with the midfiled 3 of Messrs Crouch, Crouch and Boyd linking well. The home side were restricting us to speculative shots from distance by a combination of stought defending and a failure to link with the front two. Another good cross from Rovers on 20 minutes found an attacker whos header just went over.
A few stearn words at half time saw Jacko come out with renewed confidence and looking to link with team mates, rather than trying to do it all by himself. More good possesion from the Baptists saw the home side starting to defend deaper, but still posing a threat with quick inciteful breakouts. Parity was achieved 10 miutes in. A corner fell kindly to Jacko on the 6 yard box for an easy finish.
At this point it was anyones game with both sides continuing to work hard and believing they could get the vital next goal.
Rob Usherwood went close when put through on goal. But as he was closed down by quick defenders he had to shoot from distance and his effort was well saved by the keepers feet.
Rovers had a good chance following a misplaced defensive clearance. The shot was hard and on target, but fortunately straight at Pennels who saved well.
The winner came with 5 minutes left on the clock. Lee Boyd picked up the ball on the left of the 18 yard box and placed an accurate shot across the face of the goal into the bottom right corner.
A fantastic win against a very good side. As we travel to Bexhill AAC for a cup quarter final next week, our destiny is firmly in our own hands.

TROY SCORES A GOAL
BBFC I 7-2 CINQUE PORTS
There was an amazing atmosphere at the rec this afternoon as Battle's front side enjoyed a brilliant win over Cinque Ports.
Tom Frere-Smith, Adam Thompsett and Rob Fairy each scored twice but the roof was lifted off the stadium on 80 minutes when substitute Troy Parsons scored his first goal for the club to give his side an unassailable 6-2 lead. Well done Troy!

FOUR + ONE = FIVE
BBFC II 5-1 West Hill Utd II
A strong start for BBFC seconds saw them creating a good few early chances as they looked to get their season back on track after 2 poor league displays before Christmas.
Despite their lowly positon in the league, West Hill had some capable players and were finding succes with crosses from wide into the home side penalty area.
It was this route that broght them success on 16 minutes. As the cross dropped into the six yard box, neither goalie or defenders cut it out and it dropped kindly to a West Hill attacker for a tap in.
The Baptists drew level 2 minutes later. Jacko picked up the ball 25 yards out and unleashed an unstopable shot into the top corner.
That sparked the quickest hat-rick in the clubs history as Jacko claimed his third goal barely 4 minutes later. His second came almost straight from the kick-off. Again he found space on the edge of the area and scored with a deflected shot. A minute later West Hill had a goal disallowed for pushing, and on 22 miuntes the hat-rick was completed with a good finish after he was found with a through ball from midfield.
The game calmed down for the rest of the half with the home side enjoying the bulk of possession and West Hill occaisionally threatening with high balls into the box.
A minute into the scond half, Jamie Crouch shot from 25 yards to see his effort just miss the top corner. 4 minutes in, and a Rob Usherwood cross to the far post found Jacko whos effort just went wide.
On 60 minutes Jacko claimed his fourth goal as he again found space in the area. Rob Usherwood finally got the goal that his hard work deserved. An end to end passing move was finished when Jacko found Rob one on one with the keeper for a good finish with the outside of his foot.
More great chances came, but the home side failed to convert. A Rob Usherwood cross found Erik Chapman, whos effort hit the cross bar. Barry crouch had a shot well saved by West Hills excellent young keeper. Then with 5 minutes to play, Erik Chapman returned the compliment with a cross that found Rob Usherwood. All around saw his spectacular overhead hit the cross bar and cross the line?? Unfortunately, the ref (who did have a very good game) could not see it from 25 yards out and therefore could not give the goal. A case of what might of been in Robs quest for goal of the season.
A very good performance by the second team as we travel to Bexhill Rovers next week for another very important league game

HAMPDEN PARK HEARTBREAK
Hampden Park 3-2 BBFC II
It all started so well on Saturday against Hampden Park. Within 2 minutes, new father Jamie Crouch opened the scoring with a well taken shot from the edge of the area. Hampden Park started the game with 9 men, and were joined by a late comer on 10 minutes and played the remaining 80 minutes 1 man short.
Despite the numerical disadvantage, they were working hard for each other, and a strong physical presence combimed with quick break outs from defence were creating opportunities.
The Baptists almost doubled the lead on 17 minutes when a shot from Jacko was tipped onto the bar and to safety. Hampden Park equalised with 25 minutes played. A quick throw found a player on the edge of the area, and as a Baptists defender rushed out to close down, a penalty was conceded.
Goal of the match (and possibly the season) came on the half hour. Marcus Doyle picked the ball up in his own half on the left side. A remarkable turn of pace saw him skip past two players and cut in towards the penalty area. A cool finish on the run found the top corner for a wonder goal and 2-1.
The home side again drew level on 37 minutes. Another throw found an unmarked player. He controlled and turned in one movement to be in on goal and finished well.
As the second half came, the Baptists continued to pepper the home sides goal. Chance after chance came but none were converted. Occaisionally, Hampden park would break out from the siege to create a little panick in the Baptists defence.
With the final whistle almost on us, a Hampden Park player picked the ball up out wide, was allowed to cut inside whilst evading a couple of challenges, to score with a well taken shot. This was a game that on the balance of chances created, the Baptists should have won comfortably, but in the end came away with nothing.
You dont always get what you deserve.....or do you??

BAPTISTS MEET WITH NEW DESTINY
NEW DESTINY 1-4 BBFC I
Battle Baptist FC reached the last 16 of the National Christian Trophy thanks to a hard-earned 4-1 victory at Croydon on Saturday.
Preparation for the game wasn't perfect as the team minibuses got stuck in heavy Saturday lunchtime traffic in Croydon and arrived at the ground just 40 minutes before kick off. However, this just seemed to galvanise the squad even more and though several front line players were absent, no-one would have described the team as lacking in spirit or desire.
On a challenging slanting pitch, New Destiny started with great assurance, controlling the first 15 minutes with skillful dribbles and neat midfield passing, causing the visitors to work hard for any possession. However, against the run of play, Battle scored first when Gary Walsh found space between defenders and cleverly clipped a lofted chip over the head of the on-rushing keeper to open the scoring from outside the penalty area.
Not discouraged by the set-back, the home team continued to play great football in the testy wind but Battle's solid, well-organised defensive unit showed great resilience to repel any threats.
Soon Battle broke through again. Working the line at the bottom of the hill, Rhys Bennett collected a pass on the right and crafted a teasing low cross in behind the Destiny defence for Adam Thompsett to thankfully thump home at the back post.
An optimistic half-time team talk made the Battle boys believe in a win but within seconds of the restart, Andy Poulter was called upon to save brilliantly in a one-on-one situation that would have brought the home team straight back into the game.
With this threat extinguished, Battle extended their lead in the next attack, with a forging run and fine finish from steely midfield man Matt Lee.
New Destiny pulled a goal back in strange fashion when a wind assisted left wing strike arched over Poulter’s head and under the bar. However, any hopes of a comeback were dashed with another strong Matt Lee surge – this time wide midfielder Liam Fenwick supplied the cross for his teammate to convert with a timely outstretched volley which crept gleefully inside the post to open up a comfortable 3 goal margin again.
The only mar on a terrific performance came when Battle's captain Andy Mills was badly injured in an accidental incident, forcing a substitution and a reshuffle. Substitute Gary Thompsett ensured the attacking threat continued whilst brother Adam worked tirelessly, replacing Mills in centre midfield. PLEASE PRAY FOR ANDY'S ANKLE TO RECOVER WITH SUPERNATURAL SPEED.
Searching for another breakthrough, the home team continued to pepper the Battle blockade with a wave of attacks, but all to no avail as Rob Jordan, Adam Barton, Kieran Mayhew and Erik Chapman defended with their lives to maintain the lead. Andy Oliver played his part well, replacing the tiring goalscorer Walsh up front, whilst Troy Parsons made his 1st team debut, connecting with a smashing volley before the final whistle concluded a well-earned win for the Baptists who travelled back to the South Coast with memories of an amazing day to Croydon. Praise God.
Reward for the Baptists is a home tie in the full National Draw, against Hinckley Baptists (Leicester) or Calvary CF (Sunderland) on January 21st. Put it in your diary and we'll see you at Battle Rec for the next step on the way to the final...God willing!
A word was given at church today that I think has relevance to us in the Football Club. It said, 'The Lord treads this road with you to be the lamp to your feet and the light for your path, so step forward with confidence and faith'. I feel this ties in with what the Lord has been saying to me throughout the week...'Stand tall and be confident'.

A WAKE UP CALL
Wittersham II 4-1 BBFC II
This was always going to be a tough test against Wittersham who had only lost once previously. The Baptists started strongly, with quick passing through midfiled creating anumber of half chances. Pick of them came on 11 minutes when Jamie Crouch fired just wide from 25 yards out.
The home side were gifted the lead shortly afterwards. A well struck shot from the edge of the area was spilled into the goal by the unfortunate Pennels for 1-0. The Baptists drew level barely 2 minutes later. A free kick into the 6 yard box found Rob Usherwood with his back to goal, turning to finish well.
Wittersham were gifted another goal on 25 minutes. Poor defending saw a Wittersham defender rise to head home from close range at the near post. This seemed to galvanise the home side who were growing in confidence. Tactics of getting numbers behind the ball and then breaking with pace and purpose when they won possession back were bringing success.
On 35 minutes as the Baptists appeals for what they thought was a stonewall penalty fell on deaf ears, Wittersham went straight up the other end to score - difficult to take.
As the second half came, the Baptists were defending better, but still not creating many chances. Rob Usherwood should have scored on 75 minutes when put through by Jacko, only to see his effot lofted over the bar. Wittersham could have extended there lead, after hitting the post early on in the half and having their own ligitimate appeal for a penalty turned down.
Wittersham were in no mood to let the lead slip away. Strong defending and incisive breaks were frustrating the Baptists. The home side scored again close to the final whistle to secure all 3 points and perhaps bragging rights (for now only!) as the battle for top spot in div 7 hots up.
This was an afternoon when the attitude of some players dissapointed. We remain in top spot as results went our way in other games. Wittersham deserved their win. We need to dust ourselves off and bounce back stronger than ever over the next 2 weeks against Orington and Hampden Park

BITTER DEFEAT MADE EASIER TO SWALLOW
DYNAMOS 2-1 BBFC I
The two best teams in Division 2 met at Old Town Rec last Saturday in the most competitive yet friendly head-to-head battles. Unfortunately for Battle, it was Dynamos who stepped away with the points.
Both teams were well aware of the importance of this match at the wrong end of Division 2 and despite the loss of Adam Gooch to injury against Albert the previous weekend, Battle started confidently. Rhys Bennett was unlucky as his shot was tipped around the post and Matt Lee had a 25 yard effort that looked goalbound but somehow dipped just over the bar.
Dynamos Nemesis Dean Pugh broke the deadlock sprinting through the defence to score just before half time, but this was equalised in the second half when substitute Gary Walsh scored with his first kick of the match with a well placed penalty after Nic Gooch had been upended.
Dynamos restored the lead 10 minutes later and the Baptists missed 3 good chcances to draw level again, all with headers. Firstly Walsh dived at a low cross only to see his header come back off the post, then Adam Thompsett's back post header was cleared off the line defore a free kick was met superbly by Ollie Jeffs whose glancing header was parried around the post.
The final whistle halted Battle's valiant effort to scramble a point leaving the visitors emersed in the nip-and-tuck tussle at the base of Division 2.
But this was football in its best clothes. Both teams played in a superb sporting spirit and deserve great praise for their fair attitude. Opposing players shared genuine friendship whilst playing passionately for their respective club. The referee enjoyed an afternoon of pain free football and didn't have a jot of ill discipline or foul language to attend to. This is just the way I pray that we could play football every week and I, for one, believe that the bitterness of defeat was so much more easy to swallow, despite the obvious and enormous disappointment. Well done Dynamos and well done BBFC.
We have another great game to look forward to next week when we travel to Croydon (details below) to play New Destiny in Round 2 of the National Christian Trophy. Early meet.

A FAIR RESULT
BBFC II 2-4 Wadhurst Utd II
A poor second half showing saw the Baptists 2nd string loose 4-2 to Wadhurst in the 2nd round of the hastings Lower Divisions Cup.
It started well as the home side took the lead on 9 minutes with an OG following a well taken Barry Crouch corner. Baptists were playing well and if anything were on top, helped by a dominant midfield showing by messrs. Crouch; Crouch and Batchelor.
Wadhurst drew level on 20 minutes following a good exchange of passes in midfield finding an attaker in behind the Baptists defence. For 10 minutes or so the home sides performance suffered as Wadhurst started to press home an advantage.
Batchelor steadied the ship on the half hour to put the Baptists 2-1. Further chances were created and spurned as the half time whistle approached. Wadhurst drew level again on 44 minutes with a 30 yard free lick that sailed into the top corner.
Two minutes into the second half the Baptists were behind for the first time. A short corner caught the home side napping and the striker finished well. The home side were now struggling to re-assert themselves. Wadhurst could now see the finishing post and raised their game accordingly. The Baptists were unable to convert a number of chances that came their way. Pick of the bunch was a header against the crossbar from barely 1 yard out after good work down the left by Marcus Doyle.
Wadhurst had a goal ruled out for offside and then a player sent off for protesting too loudly. Despite the one man advantage the home side could not draw level.
Wadhurst scored again as the final whistle approached to secure passage to the next round. This was a poor second half performance with a number of players below their best. We need to learn the lessons raedy for the trip to Wittersham next week.

THE RUN CONTINUES
BBFC II 4-0 Hawkhurst Utd II
Another very good win and a clean sheet for the unbeaten Batists second string.
Hawkhurst came to us on the back of a 4 match wining run, two of them against Wittersham, who were second in the division. Very quickly, the Baptists midfield got on top and despite one early scare when Hawhurst shot over the bar from a corner, the home side were dominating most of the early exchanges.
Scoring was opened after 10 minutes when Kyle Jackson converted a penalty he had won himself after being upended by the keeper. Five minutes later and the score was doubled when Rob Usherwood was put through with a clever headed pass from Stu Batchelor and he finished cooly lifting the ball over the outrushing keeper.
On 39 minutes Jacko scored again, with a shot that squeezed between the goalie and his near post, the goal virtually ending the match as a contest.
Three minutes into the second half the Baptists scored again. After a clever inter-change of passes, Rob usherwood finished with a well taken volley from the edge of the area. Substitutions came thick and fast with Marcus Doyle, Owen Davies and Paul Crane coming on for Jacko, Lee Boyd and Erik Chapman.
With the game won, the urgency of the Baptists play seemed to fall away. It was clear to see why Hawkhurst have had such a good recent run, as pacy wingers and a solid defence kept the Baptists on their toes.
After another good win the message as always has to be not to get complacent. We have one nothing yet! All that 24 points guarantees is that we probabaly wont finish bottom!!

WIN WIN WEEKEND
BBFC II 6-3 Winkney Seniors
This was always going to be a tough test for the Baptists and none more so without influential manager Gary Wenham and team captain Jamie crouch.
Right from the start the Baptists were under pressure from a Winkney midfield that dominated the first half. However a quick free kick from halfway saw Jacko head the bouncing ball past the out coming keeper and 10 minutes later a close range effort from Marcus Doyle saw the Baptists surprisingly two goals up in the first quarter. The visitors continued to apply pressure and after a few near misses the pressure told when a low cross flashed across the goal and was unfortunately turned in by a Baptists defender.
The Visitors were now clearly in the ascendency and 10 minutes before half time they again found the net for the equalizer. Five minutes before half time right back and stand-in manager Owen Davies substituted himself to make way for Ian Stonestreet.
At half time the Baptists could feel fortunate that the score was 2 v 2. Some assertive words at halftime by Davies and a change of formation to play 3, 5, and 2 enabled the Baptists to start the second half with a new vigor. Stand in captain Stuart Bachelors terrier like performance supported by good linking play from Barry Crouch and Lee Boyd began to turn the tide in the midfield battle; this together with excellent performances from wing backs Stonestreet and Doyle eventually saw the Baptists rewarded for their efforts when a fine header from Bachelor was destined for the top left hand corner before Boyd added his finishing touch with his own header to make certain.
The Baptists were now playing with renewed confidence and added further goals through Barry Crouch and Rob Usherwood. Ten minutes from time a Winkney free kick found the top left-hand corner to give the visitors some hope. Winkney continued to press but 3 minutes before the end Lee Boyd cleverly avoided offside to round the keeper and slot home.
Credit should go to stoic defensive performance by Leon Crouch and Eric Chapman and a solid performance in goal by Pennels. However man of the match was Rob Fairy with a superb defensive performance against a very good centre forward. An outstanding second half performance was rewarded with a 6 v 3 victory and topped off by kind words from referee Beaney who complimented the team on their sportsmanship.

WIN WIN WEEKEND
Yesterday was a splendid Saturday for the 2 BBFC teams. The 1sts moved up another place in Division 2 thanks to the 2-1 victory over Eastbourne Dynamos at the Rec, whilst the 2nd team continue thier amazing form with a well fought 6-3 win against Winkney at Claverham with a goal apiece from Rob Usherwood, Marcus Doyle, Barry Crouch and Kyle Jackson and 2 goals from Lee Boyd.
The 1sts were dominant in the first half of their game and deserved much more than the 1-0 half time lead that was given to them by a magnificent Adam Gooch strike in the 45th minute. This came after the home team had missed a whole host of great chances, carved out by some really good footballing moves. Early in the game Gary Walsh ran through on goal to see his shot blocked by the Dynamos keeper. Rhys Bennett crossed invitingly for the veteran striker whose diving header flew wide. A corner lead to a goalmouth scramble and the 6-yard box resembled a pin-ball machine before the visitors managed to nudge the ball safe, whilst the energetic endeavours of Ian Rafati down the left almost grabbed a goal.
In midfield, Jamie Crouch and Andy Mills were excellent winning the ball and controlling attacks. The back 4 all played well giving Andy Poulter very little action.
When another header from Walsh crept agonisingly wide it looked like the home team would never score before the deadlock was broken when Adam Gooch cracked in a first-time, looping shot that dipped under the bar from 20 yards.
The Baptists carried on in the same groove after the break but were derailed when Dean Pugh equalised when put through one-on-one for Dynamos. Minutes later and the same player got through again in a similar situation but this time he chose to pass and the attack was thwarted.
Back in goal after a 2 week break, Andy Poulter pulled off 2 great saves as the contest started to look more even. Substitute Adam Thompsett had a good chance blocked and defender Rob Jordan connected powerfully from 30yards but the shot flew over the bar.
With 6 minutes left, and the game heading towards neutral, Adam Gooch jinked past 2 defenders and tucked his shot in off the post to claim all 3 points for Battle.
The first half performance was the best we've played this season and reflect the improvement we're making. This was a strong competitive defensive performance and if the attack had converted more chances in the first 45 minutes, the scoreline would have been much more comfortable...I'll hold my hands up for that!!! Well done team.
Team:Andy Poulter, Dave Mills, Nic Gooch, Adam Staplehurst, Rob Jordan, Ian Rafati, Jamie Crouch, Andy Mills, Rhys Bennett, Gary Walsh, Adam Gooch subs Kieran Mayhew, Adam Thompsett, Gary Thompsett, James Crane

DRAW HAS TO BE TAKEN
BBFC 4 -4 Hastings Rangers.
The 1st team were involved in an 8 goal thriller at the Rec yesterday in which they can consider themselves incredibly unfortunate not to win. The Battle side held the lead 3 times but weren't able to finish off the Hastings visitors.
As soon as the Baptists levelled at 1-1 after 10 minutes with a well directed header from captain Ollie Jeffs, they never looked in danger of losing this Division 2 fixture. With Matt Lee and Jamie Crouch controlling the midfield, the home team dominated the first half and Adam Thompsett threatened to put the church team ahead with a fierce volley that the Rangers keeper instinctively tipped over the bar, before Matt Lee thundered onto a cross field pass to smash a 25 yard shot inside the post. At the other end, Tim Nunn saved bravely to keep his team ahead at the break.
Rangers drew level when a shot came out of the bright sunlight and soared over the Battle keepers' head but the setback was overcome when Gary Thompsett showed great determination under pressure inside the 18 yard box to fire high into the roof of the Rangers' net restoring the lead.
When a Hastings player speculatively hoisted the ball over his shoulder to see it descend into the top corner from 25 yards out, the cruel blow was hard to take and the player's overexuberant celebration poured salt in the would but Battle bounced back once again. Adam Thompsett broke through the defence, checked back onto his right foot to evade the last defender and sharply stroked the ball past the oncoming keeper for 4-3.
In the absence of the usually central defensive pairing, Rob Fairy and Ollie Jeffs defended brilliantly at the heart of the battle defence but Rob Fairy had to leave the pitch early and the Baptists couldn't hang on to the ball well enough to see out the game. Rangers stole a point with 7 minutes to go and would certainly be the happier of the two teams as the final whistle ended the game.
Nevertheless, it was a fine performance from our team who will be encouraged to see the side move up a place in the division before the next important game next week at home to Eastbourne Dynamos...KO 2pm.

WINNING - A GOOD HABIT TO HAVE
BBFC II 3-2 Eastbourne Royals
A dominant first half performance was the difference in the end between BBFC sitting top of div 7 and Eastbourne Royals occupying second spot in div 6
The home side started strongly and after working the ball to the byline on the left, debutant Gary Thompsett was on hand to slot in from inside the six yard box, as the ball was cut back agross the goal. All that happened within the first minute to give the Baptists the best possible start.
A makeshift defence was coping well with Paul Crane and Ian Stonestreet filling in as full backs. Set pieces, especially corners were proving a rich source of opportunity. 24 minutes the ball came back off the crossbar and to safety following a well taken corner. 27 minutes, Lee Boyds shot is cleared off the line after Royals again failed to deal with a corner. 35 minuts and the Baptists go 2-0 up again following a corner. The ball is not cleared properly and as it drops over Barry Crouch's right shoulder he unleashed an unstoppable volley into the roof of the net.
On 42 minutes and following another corner, a Lee Boyd geader goes to safety off the cross bar. It wasn't all about set pieces as the home sides midfield were winning a lot of possesion, keeping the ball well and creating opportunities for the hard working and pacy Marcus Doyle.
The second half started in the same vein as a Rob Fairy header from a corner was gathered by a good save. The game turned on its head 13 minutes into the second half. Royals worked the ball to the bye line and the Baptists failed to cut out the pass as it came across the face of the goal were a striker was on hand for an easy tap in. Royals now had new found enthusiasm for the fight and were starting to dominate. Long balls over the defence were causing confusion, not helped by the strong afternoon sun, making it difficult for the home sides central defenders to spot the ball. A combination of frantic defending and a slice of good fortune kept the opposition at bay. The 2 goal lead was re-established with 30 minutes to play. Jamie Crouch stepped up to take a free kick on the edge of the box and found the net via a slight deflection.
Royals kept pressing and scored again to make the last 8 minutes very interesting. As a corner came in keeper Ray Pennels missed his punch leaving a Royals player with an easy header. As the clock wound down, Royals has a player sent off, and as we played stoppage time, Rob Usherwwod worked a good opportunity in front of goal only to see his shot find the side netting.
This was a really solid performance against a good side, who in the end were unfortunate perhaps not to at least take the game into extra time. Winning is a good habit to have and the Baptists second string, despite numerous changes again, came away with a hard fought win, to be 8 from 8 and continue this fantastic start to the season.
With no league or cup fixture next week, lets enjoy the rest and set ourselves up for the visit of Winkney Seniors in 2 weeks time

A CUP RUN??
BBFC II 2-1 Bo Peep
A strong second half performance saw the Baptists come back from a 1-0 half time deficit to win 2-1 and progress into the 2nd round of the Hastings Lower Divisions Cup.
Bo Peep from div 4 took the lead on 23 minutes when Nick Gamble finished with a superbly taken volley from the corner of the 18 yard box. The Baptsts were competing well and whilst never gaining the upper hand completely were creating some good chances.
On 27 minutes Rob Usherwood missed on open goal when the ball was cut back from the bye line. Every one had stopped thinking the ball had gone out of play. With no refs whistle and Rob seemingly taking his eye off the ball, the chance went begging.
A minute later the same player did get the ball in the net only for it to be ruled out for offside. With 2 minutes to play in the half and after good work down the right, Jacko met the cross well only to see his header bounce into the ground and over the bar to safety.
As the second half came the Baptists grew in stature and were starting to dominate. Parity was achieved 7 minutes in. A Jamie Crouch corner found Lee Boyd unmarked in the 6 yard box and he finished well. Lee is now top scorer for the Baptists second string with 7 from 7. Lets hope that rich form continues.
James Crane almost gave us the win on 24minutes with a header from another corner, only to see his attempt flash agonisingly wide.
Bo Peep continued to threaten and perhaps should have been awarded a penalty when keeper Grant Wenham rushing out from his goal to clear collided with a Bo peep forward on the edge of the area. Nothing given.
The win was secured with 3 minues left on the clock. A Jamie Crouch free kick from 25 yards found its way through a crowd of players and into the net.
Another very good win for the Baptists with a notable performance from 16 year old debutant Adam Barton. As always ther are areas to improve on and this week it must be composure on the ball when we are attacking, and the ability to slow the game down when we are in possesion.
Another tough cup fixture next week as we entertain Eastbourne Royals, lying second in div 6.

BBFC I 0-2 Hollington
The 1st team made a valiant effort in their 1st round Hastings Junior Cup tie against Hollington yesterday.
On a hot afternoon the Battle team withstood great pressure and defended with magnificent determination and effort until their defence was breached 15 minutes into the 2nd half by a fantastic free kick which flew into the top corner from 25 yards.
An Adam Staplehurst power-driver, which swerved visciously in the air, almost brought the home team level, but the Hollington keeper parried over the bar. Then Rob Jordan curved in a free kick which eluded the visiting defence but again the keeper amazingly tipped around the post as the ball looked set to sneak inside the back post. Another free kick from rob Jordan saw an unmarked Adam Johnson surge in at the back post but the flying midfielder just failed to get the touch to convert the chance.
With time abbing away the home team pushed forward and Hollington scored their 2nd with the very last kick of the match and the referee blew for full time without a restart.
This was a brave and encouraging performance to follow up the good win last week. battle will learn a lot when they reflect on a gruelling and competitive game.
The next test for the team comes with the visit of Division 3 leaders Hawkhurst next week in the Wisden's Sports Challenge Cup at Battle Rec.

FIRST WIN FEELS GREAT
ST HELENS 1-2 BBFC I
For several different reasons, which I'll explain, yesterday's win against St Helens has given me enormous delight.
At last, we're off and running. St Helens would have risen above us at the bottom of the division if they had won. I recall 2 seasons ago when, despite playing well, we couldn't buy a win from anywhere and it took 'till April 26th before we eventually secured our one and only League victory. This season's campaign is now underway and we'll begin to grow in confidence and belief.
Not that we played well...it was a very untidy game. There was little space in midfield and neither team afforded the other enough time to play creatively. The surface of the pitch wasn't helpful and the weather huffed and puffed to add to the challenge.
Both sides started nervously, and the scrappy battle for territory only produced one clear cut chance, when Rafa played a neat one-two on the right to release Adam Gooch, who uncharacteristically fluffed his shot when through on goal. Adam Johnson fired several tremendous inswinging corners from the right and one of these just missed the brow of Adam Thomsett as he flew in at the back post.
Our defence were superb throughout the game as they stubbornly withstood the St Helens attacks. Dave Mills stretched high to nod the ball off the striker's head at the far post, saving a certain goal. Then disaster...Andy Poulter mis-judged a sky-high lob into our box and missed his punch. As the ball bounced 15 feet off the hard ground the St Hellens player lept above our player to head home the opening goal.
Shortly afterwards tempers were tested when Dave Mills was mysteriously hacked down off the ball and out of sight of the referee. We held our nerve courageously during this awkward period when the game could easily have deteriorated into flashes of yellow and red. This is a great strength and players are to be congratulated for their restraint and discipline in these difficult circustances which deminished after the half time break.
The style and tempo continued into the second half, with Andy Mills and Matt Lee fighting hard in midfield to close down the opposition and gain possession. The St Helens defence were well-organised and tactically we found more success driving the ball over the top, into the corners and down the sides.
And finally our endeavours were rewarded. A niggly foul on our attacker resulted in a 25 yard free kick which Rob Jordon curled round the wall and past the keeper, to level the scores and put smiles back on all our faces. Substitute Rhys Bennett followed this up with a right footed rocket volley that was brilliantly parried by the St Helens keeper and Andy Mills pounced on a half-cleared corner but watched his shot sail wide of the mark.
In a game where service to the strikers was as scarce as a Wayne Rooney appearance in a European Championship opening game, it was left to central defender Nic Gooch to score the winner 15 minutes from time, leaping amid a throng of players to nod in Rob Jordan free kick and sending his team into rapturous joy.
As the clock ran down, we defended like I would want to see us defend all the time, with a determination that nothing was going to get through. The ball was kicked in all directions to spoil attacks and deny opportunities until after 5 minutes of added time, the final whistle sounded the celebration.
This was a steely performance of gritty determination that impressed me and shows what we can achieve. There are still some important improvements to be fixed but we've experienced the rewards of a more competitive attitude, which is necessary for success in Division 2 and beyond. Well done fellas ... now you can enjoy the week and don't lose that spirit for next week's visit of Hollington II in the Hastings Junior Cup.

A JOB WELL DONE
Sandhurst II 1-4 BBFC II
The old addage that 'you can only beat whats in front of you' was true on a day when the Baptits second team secured a comfortable win at Sandhurst without ever really playing at their best.
Late changes to the starting line up were called for due to work commitments and missed trains. Despite 2 players mistaking Sandhurst village in Kent for Sandhurst playing fields on the Ridge, a strong starting line up took to the field.
Two goals in each half from Barry Crouch, Rob Usherwood, Jamie Crouch and Kieran Mayhew secured the win. The lone Sandhurst replay came from the impressive Tim Slater who finished well when the Baptists failed to clear their lines from a corner.
This has been an impressive start to the season beating a number of club records. One of the most pleasing things for me is that we have only conceded 2 goals, the lowest so far in all divisions. I know we are a match for any side in this division, but let's not lose sight of the fact that 5 of our 6 wins have come against teams that currently occupy the bottom 4 places in the division.
Confidence in the team is sky high and the league campaign takes a back seat for the next two weeks as we have 2 cup matches against teams from higher divisions. In the knowledge that 'you can only beat whats in front of you' lets raise our game and send out a message to all lower division teams that we are a side to be reckonned with!

EXCELLENT START CONTINUES
West Hill Utd II 0-5 BBFC II
The second teams excellent start to the season continued with a 5-0 win away to West Hill Utd. On a sweltering day for football the Baptists started strongly, dominating possesion and creating good chances.
Scoring was opened on 9 minutes. A Jamie Crouch corner was floated to the far post where Lee Boyd was on hand to finish with a well taken header. Corners were proving to be a very potent attacking weapon as a number of chances came but were not converted.
The lead was doubled after 19 minues. Jacko fed the ball wide to Paul Crane. His low cross found Lee Boyd who had made a stong run from midfield to finish well. It was one way traffic now with some good chances being created and spurned due to a combination of wayward shooting and good goalkeeping. A third goal came on 40 minutes, again from a corner. West Hill failed to clear and Rob Fairy was on hand to finish with a well taken shot.
The second half continued in the same vein, with the Baptists making most of the running. To their credit West Hill never gave up, and once or twice, a lack of concentration caused confusion in defence and the Baptists had to scrabble to avoid conceding.
Paul Crane had the ball in the net on 70 minutes only for the goal to be ruled out for offside. With 10 minues left debutant Kieran Mayhew made it 4-0 scoring from inside the 6 yard box having been set up by an unselfish Paul Crane. Scoring was completed with 4 minutes left to play. A Barry Crouch free kick from 30 yards sailed over all defenders and into the net off a despairing goalie.
A final cameo came in the closing minutes with Rob Fairy bringing the ball out of defence like Alan Hansen in his heyday, only to drag his shot just wide.
Another good all round performance, but still with areas to improve in. We travel to Sandhurst next week looking to extend our unbeaten run, before two tough cup matches against teams from higher divisions.

TWO-SHOE TRAINING
Bring both types of footwear to training on Wednesday as the light is fading fast and we won't be able to train totally on grass.
We'll start off with boots on the grass from 6 - 7 then move onto the tennis courts where you'll need trainers...remember, the 3-G astroturf isn't available until late October (earliest) because of floodlight problems.

100%
BBFC II 6-0 Sandhurst II
The Baptists second string continued their 100% start to the season with a thumping win against Sandhurst.
On a bright autumn afternoon with the pitch in tip top condition, the home side started strongly and Jamie Crouch opened the scoring with a well taken penalty after only 4 minutes.
That set the tone for the afternoon as the Baptists dominated possesion and sent wave after wave of attacks into the heart of the Sandhurst defence. Perhaps a downside to the proceedings was a lack of composure in front of goal, meaning that a host of good chances were spurned.
On 24 minutes Rob Fairy missed an open goal with a header over the bar when it seemed easier to score. Shortly afterwards Jamie Crouch doubled his and the teams tally with a low hard drive from the edge of the box.
Andy Oliver was on for the striken Brian Fitzgerald, but the three man attack failed to increase the lead up untill half time.
10 minutes into the second half a Crouch free kick found Lee Boyd who finished with a good header. Goal of the match came on 70 minutes. Lee Boyd getting his second with a stunning 30 yard strike into the top left corner. Scoring continued 8 minutes later when Marcus Doyle cleverly lobbed the outrushing keeper after a fine run to collect a though ball.
With 5 minues left to play Lee Boyd completed a perfect hatrick (left foot, right foot and header) smashing home from 1 yard out. A minute later Ian Stonestreet hit the post.
We can take enormous confidence from this win and our start to the season in the knowledge that there are definately stiffer tests to come.

THREE OUT OF THREE
BBFC II 1-0 Herstmonceux III
A good win if at times less than convincing performance against a very good Herstmonceux team.
The visitors started strongly and the Baptists were unable to match their workrate and organisation. Cracks were starting to show as some players started to blame others rather than accepting responsibility for their own performance. To their enormous credit the home side dug in deep and restricted Ceux to speculative efforts.
Perhaps the best two chances of the half came on 20 minutes. Firstly a one on one chance by Josh Jackson was cleared of the line. From the resulting corner a towering header from Darren Noble went agonisingly wide.
A pattern of our season so far is that we seem to need a bit of a kick up the backside at half-time. Todays game was no different and the Baptists came out for the second period with renewed energy and organisation. Whilst never fully in control, the Baptists were playing in a more considered way and creating some good chances.
Herstonceux continued to present a threat. In the 57th minute Andrew Stewart cleared of the line following confusion between defence and goalie. Danger was not cleared completely and as a shot came in keeper Ray Pennels made an excellent save low to his right.
The winning goal came shortly afterwards. A Barry Crouch free kick from wide left was met with a well taken header by the impressive Rob Fairy. Both sides continued to press without creating many clear cut chances. In the end the Baptists came out on top in what was a keenly contested and very competitive game of football.
This was a very satisfying result from a side that looked very different to the previous two weeks. I'm please that we are becoming a very hard team to score against, something that will stand us in very good stead as the season progresses.

FIRSTS FADE
BBFC I 1-5 CROWHURST
The front team conceded 4 second half goals yesterday against Crowhurst in Division 2.
Matt Lee opened the scoring on 20 minutes with a clinical finish in front of goal that finished off a beautifully worked team goal and clever passing from Adam Johnson and Gary Walsh down the left wing.
The hosts had a chance to make it two but Walsh's 12-yard header flew into the welcome arms of life-long friend Vinnie Hoad, playing his first game for two years in the Crowhurst goal. Other chances came and went before Crowhurst leveled from the penalty spot.
The visitors took the lead 15 minutes into the 2nd half with a central free kick from the edge of the 18 yard box then extended the lead soon after and secured the result with two further goals as the home team faded.
This was a much closer game than the scoreline suggests and although the Baptists were well-beaten in the end they will take much encouragement from the first-half performance and the return to the team of Ian Rafati and another good substitute performance from Kieran Mayhew. The return of the Gooch brothers for next week's trip to Ore Athletic will give further encouragement.
A sour note in the afternoon was the disgraceful treatment of our assistant referee by four 'spectators' who intimidated, threatened and verbally abused our man to an extraordinary degree unprecidented in my 18 year experience playing in the East Sussex Football League. My prayer this morning is that the Lord will bring peace and love to the lives of these four people together with wisdom and courage to those that need to act to eradicate this dreadful behaviour from grass roots football.

TWO OUT OF TWO
BBFC II 4-1 Northiam 75 II
A comfortable win in the end but a first half performance that let us down again.
The afternoon started brightly when a cross from Josh jackson wide right sailed into the net for 1-0. For 10 minutes the home side played well and looked like dominating the game.
Poor defending let in a Northiam attacker and he finished with a well taken volley. That seemed to knock the stuffing out of the Baptists and the standard of play quickly deteriorated. The work rate fell away, and we struggled with the basics of simple passing and keeping the ball. Northiam were the busier side. Ian Crispin did well to clear off our line on the half hour whilst at the other end Rob Fairy had a good attempt also cleared off the line.
A re-organisation at half time along with some stiff words from the coach saw the Baptists come out playing with renewed confidence and taking the game to Northiam. Three miutes in, Rob Fairy scored with a well taken header from a corner. On 55 minutes, Josh Jackson made the game safe with a well taken goal after good work from Ian Stonestreet.
Perhaps goal of the game came with 20 minutes left. Marcus Doyle controlled a high ball well and in the same move found Lee Boyd who lobbed the advancing keeper.
We need to take the positives out of what was a good win but learn the lesson that we cannot afford another poor first half showing. We will undoubtedly come up against stronger opposition as the season progresses and will be punished if we play like we did in the first period today.
We entertain Herstmonceux next Saturday and with a number of players unavailable, opportunities are there for all.

1STs OFF THE MARK
Hatsings Rangers 3-3 BBFC I.
Our front team recovered from 3-0 down yesterday to earn a well-deserved point in a dramatic game at Bulverhythe.
The game started in summer sunshine conditions and Rangers took the lead with a great individual finish after 15 minutes. Matt Lee went close with a near post header at a corner and Adam Gooch had a penalty claim turned down when he appeared to be up-ended in the box. Adam Thompsett flew down the right wing and squared to Gooch by the penalty spot but a superbly-timed last ditch tackle denied the Battle striker an equaliser.
All the half-time positivity was crushed with the first kick of the 2nd half when the Rangers striker scored from the kick off, shooting accurately under the bar from the half-way line. Before long it was 3-0 and the result was starting to look safe for the home team. Battle had other ideas. After conceding their 3rd, the visitors attacked immediately up the left wing. Johnson to Gooch, Gooch runs with ball into area, squares to Tompsett who taps in from 3 yards to put belief back into the battling baptist side.
Throughout the game Rangers looked vulnerable in the air at set pieces and Ollie Jeffs powered in a thunderous second goal from a Johnson corner. Rangers were beginning to flag and 3 late tackles yielded yellow cards, one of which badly injured substitute Tim Walsh who is unlikely to play for several months.
Sensing a remarkable recovery, the visiting team pressed for an equaliser and found it through 2nd substitute Kieran Mayhew who showed great determination to snaffle the ball over the line in a 6-yard scuffle.
With 5 minutes left on the clock, Battle had two great chances to steal all 3 points. Adam Gooch was now effervescent in attack but after a cutting run into the opponents area his shot scraped narrowly wide, whilst the young Mayhew turned his defender skillfully only to see his volley fly agonisingly over the crossbar.
The game closed with the Baptists feeling like winners with their first point of the season's campaign but rueing the fact that they had given a 3 goal start to their Hastings hosts.
Next week the men in orange play their first home game of the season when they entertain Crowhurst at Battle Rec. KO 3pm.

A GOOD START
BBFC 3-0 Orington II
In the end a hard fought derserved win for the Baptists 2nd string on an afternoon where the result could have been so different.
Orington started broghtly and could have scored in the first minute, but instead the striker pulled his shot wide to let the home side off the hook. In many ways that set the tone of the first half with the Baptists struggling to get to grips with a pacy Orington attack.
A number of missed chances combined with the Baptsts defence starting to get a grip of the game, meant that possesion and chances started to level out. A lead was established on 19 minutes. Lee Boyds long throw was flicked on at the near post by Stuart Batchelor where Barry Crouch was unmarked at the far post to slot home.
Orington continued to press and a combination of strong defending and poor finishing kept them at bay. Another good chance came for the home side on 40 minutes. Stuart Batchelors far post header just missing.
Injuries and illness were starting to take there toll leading to wholesale re-organisation of the Baptist line up. Ian Crispin was already on for Leon crouch. Ray Pennels withdrew at halftime to be replaced in goal by James Crane and 10 minutes into the second half, a pulled hamstring meant that Owen davies to leave the field.
The side rallied well with the impressive Ian Stonestreet filing in at fullback and a strong cameo performance from Stuart Batchelor at centre half..
Despite the changes the Baptists were growing in confidence and starting to gain the upper hand on a sweltering day for football. The right hand side was proving especially productive with Ian Stonestreet, Marcus Doyle and Josh Jackson combining to produce some slick passing moves.
The lead was doubled on 65 minutes. Another long throw in the box was not dealt with effectively and Kyle Jackson was on hand to finish. Shortly afterwards, Orington had a man sent off for a two footed challenge on Ian Crispin. The game was made completely safe with about 15 minutes to go. A sharp exchange of passes from defence into midfiled found Kyle Jackson with just the keeper to beat and he finished well.
On another day, if Orington had taken their chances, the tone of this report could well of been very different. I feel sure that Orington will be challenging for honours come the end of the season, so this may well prove a vital win. We can take a lot of positives from this performance, but need to make sure we start much stronger in future games.

TWO OUT OF TWO
BBFC 2-1 Battle Rangers
The first team polished off their two game pre-season run-up with a tidy win against a young and promising Rangers side.
The game was precariously poised when a Rangers defender put into his own goal to give the Baptists a fortuitous lead after half an hour. This after Adam Staplehurst, playing in central midfield had seen his goalbound shot well saved by the Henry Burnham in the Rangers goal.
With a back four averaging 5'4" the Baptists were unsurprisingly superior in the air. Rob Fairy was unfortunate not to score as he rose to meet a back post header only to see his effort float narrowly wide.
20 minutes into the second half and Staplehurst flicked a header into the danger area at a corner and young striker Tim Walsh found enough space in the six yard box to steer a precise finish into the corner of the net to extend his team's lead.
Rangers response was immediate and they closed the gap with a powerful header from Ollie Norris after Josh Jackson had cleared a corner off the goal line.
The result was secured with a sound defensive performance especially in the last 20 minutes as changes in players and positions had to be made.
Although this was a pleasing result, even more pleasing is the performance of several individuals. James Crane and Rob Fairy have shown themselves to be great defenders over the two games in the first team. Keeper Grant Wenham promises to be a wonderful signing in goal. Adam Thompsett and Adam Johnson proved their strength and versatility playing in both midfield and attack and the youngsters Marcus Doyle and Josh Jackson also showed promising potential in attack.
All this points towards next weekend when the season starts in earnest with an away trip to Cinque Ports. The availability of Rob Jordan, Adam Gooch, Andy Mills, Dave Mills, Ian Rafati, Tim Nunn and Kieran Mayhew all adds to the headache of selection and it may be several weeks yet before an established squad begins to emerge.
Big prayer is needed over this period - for wisdom, grace and patience - as a good number of players don't make the 2 teams on Saturday.

UNBEATEN PRE-SEASON BODES WELL
BBFC 1-1 FC Bexhill
An unbeaten pre-season campaign finished with a draw from probably our toughest test so far. FC Bexhill from div 4 were well organised but the Baptists started the stronger, bossing the midfield and creating many chances that we failed to convert.
Deadlock was broken on 35 minutes as Andy Oliver was put through on goal and finished with a well taken shot on the run from distance.
As with previous games, changes to personel followed, disrupting the play and making it difficult to sustain the advantage.
Bexhill equalised half way through the secong period. The pressure built from a number of corners where battle failed to clear there lines. In the end the equaliser was scored direct from a corner.
From that point on both sides continued to probe for the winner, with the Baptists probably creating the better opportunities.
With both sides unbeaten during pre-season and almost 40 players getting a run out, selection for the first league games of the campaign will present a challenge!!

A FAIR RESULT
BBFC 1-1 Guestling Rangers
A draw was probably the right result in this hard fought pre-season match against our friends and old adversaries from Guestling.
Both defences were on top for most of the game and as a result, chances were hard to come by for both teams.
The Baptists took the lead with 15 mins gone. The ball was worked wide, and as the cross came in Jamie Crouch's shot was turned into goal by Adam Gooch in the six yard box. The equaliser came on the half hour. Battle failed to clear their lines and a Guestling players shot cannoned off the advancing keeper Ray Pennels and into the net.
A number of changes to personel followed, making it difficult to develop any clear pattern of play. In using 15 outfield players this gave the opportunity for everyone to get some much needed match practice.
The Baptists almost took the lead on 40 mins. A Lee Boyd long throw and flick on to the far post where Andy Oliver just failed to bundle the ball over the line.
The second half again saw defences on top with both sets of attackers failing to create any clear cut chances.
Battle could have probably should have won the game in the closing minutes. Two heading chances came to Leon Crouch, both from corners taken by brother Jamie. The first went over the bar, the second went wide, when it seemed easier to hit the target.
This was a good work out against a strong and well organised Guestling team.

2ND TEAM START WITH A WIN
BBFC 5-2 Herstmonceux
A hatrick from kyle Jackson and a goal a piece from Will Foster and Erik Chapman ensured a winning start for the 2nd team.
To begin with the quality of football on show was poor, with neither side able to keep the ball for very long and defensive errors causing panic. Glimpses of things to come came from new signings Marcus Doyle and Josh Jackson, with pacy runs down the wings.
Scoring was opened on 25 minutes when Jacko netted from a corner. He doubled his tally on 43 minutes. Receiving the ball in the box, he dummied one way, turned the other and finished well, for 2 nil. The game was made safe a minute into the second half when substiture Will Foster finsihed well from the right side of the penalty area.
Herstmonceaux scored on 65 minutes when a player found himself on the edge of the 6 yard box unmarked. Our 2 goal lead was re-established straight away when Erik Chapman scored from wide right. Jacko completed his hatrick a little later for 5-1 and with time running out Herstmonceaux claimed a consolation with a good finish from distance.
This was an encouraging win, but we still have many things to work on. Top of the list is the ability to keep the ball well and recycle when necessary.
We entertain Guestling next Saturday at Claverham, and will use the game to give players that didn't feature today, an opportunity to shine.

PRE-SEASON FRIENDLIES ARRANGED
Pre-season matched have been arranged throughout August so that we can prepare well for the forthcoming season.
The first team play Elim Eagles on 20th August followed by Battle Rangers on the 27th. The second team kick off on 6th August against Herstmonceux, with Guestling Rangers on the 13th August followed by Orington on the 27th.
Its important we get your availability right for these matches, especially for the 27th, as this will be the first Saturday we will be putting out two sides.
Both Managers will try to give all players a decent run out so that you can stake your claim for a place in the starting line up on the 3rd September. So that we can get the best possible start we need all players to work hard at midweek training and during this exciting run of pre-season matches.
Despite having gone through this same process for some 30 years or more, I'm always full of excitment and anticipation at this stage of the season. I hope you are too.

POTTER SHOWS THE MAGIC TOUCH
Hastings Golf Course was the venue for the 3rd annual Battle Baptist FC Golf Tournament last weekend in a contest that evolved into 'Young 'uns against Oldies'. After a bacon-bap breakfast at the Clubhouse, the three 3-balls and a 4-ball adventured optimistically to tame the monstrous par 72 course in the usual Stableford format.
With players plucking self-declared handicaps out of the air, winning was always going to be an uphill struggle for budding PGA Champion Jack Wenham playing off six. However, striking his ball thunderously off the 2nd tee to win the Longest Drive award, Jack claimed first blood for the 'Young-uns'.
Previous winners of the Orange Jacket Andy Poulter and Gary Walsh were never in contention, with both of them straying off the straight and narrow path far too often, whilst Associate Pastor Francis Willoughby, who invested in a golf lesson the previous day, realised painfully that he'd wasted his money and should have spent more time on the putting green instead.
Crafting a beautiful iron shot at the par three 16th, it was left to BBFC fresher Peter Hook to salvage some kudos for the 'Oldies' as he landed his tee-shot just 10 feet from the hole to win the 'Nearest the Pin' trophy.
Using all his 'local knowledge' and experience, 2nd team manager and Club secretary Gary Wenham shot an impressive round to put him in 2nd place but the overall honours went to golfing wizard Greg Potter with a spellbinding 36-point total.
Battle Baptist FC would like to say a massive ‘Thank You’ firstly to the 13 players who enjoyed a great day, to Gary Wenham for organising the event and most especially to the members of Hastings Golf Club for their wonderful patience.
Battle Baptist FC has 2 adult teams playing in Division 2 and 7 of the East Sussex Football League and are welcoming new players for the forthcoming season. Training is 6:30pm every Wednesday at Claverham Community College, Battle.
Current players...it's time to sign on!! Do it at training or download a form from the ESFL website, fill it in and send it to Gary Wenham.
