2nds Win Baptist Derby

With the first team disappointingly not in action it was left to the 2nd team to entertain the masses this weekend. They did so with a 3-1 win away at fellow baptist side Beulah. Matt Lee's firm shot squirted under the keeper's body in the early minutes to set them on their way. In the second half the lead was extended with a great volley by Rob Usherwood before Toby Blackman tucked away a deserved goal late on to make it 3-0.
Beulah's consolation goal came when a bizarre collision between keeper Andy Poulter and defender Gary Williams left both baptists lying in a heap. As the Beulah attacker strolled towards an empty net he tripped and fell on the ball allowing Poulter to recover and stop the goalbound shot. With most spectators believing they were at the Billy Smart's Circus, the attacker, now facing away from goal, turned and curled a spectacular 20 yard shot into the top corner.
In Division 2 today Firehills upset the form book with a 5-3 win at Peasmarsh, whilst Herstmonceux claimed a worthy point against neighbours Magaham Down. Top team Wheatsheaf narrowly beat bottom side Mayfield 2-1.
The Super Stirch Challenge Cup reached the quarter-final stage today with Catsfield earning a semi-final spot with a 2-0 win against neighbours Ninfiled. Catsfield will play Seddlescombe who beat Mountfield 4-1.
Our first team play their quarter-final against White Knight in 2 weeks time. The reward will be a home tie against Bexhill AAC who overcame Northiam today 3-2.

2nds DRAW AT SANDHURST

The second team started 2008 with a notable draw away to Sandhurst today.
They fell behind in the second half when a free kick flew straight into the goal to give the home team the lead, but seb Elliott saved the day minutes later when he fired his corner kick straight into the top corner to level the scores.
The game was played in sticky mud which made 'total football' very difficult for the Baptists. Earlier in the game Zac Smith smacked a close range shot narrowly over the bar after Rob Usherwood split the defence with an accurate pass. Jake Wilkinson ought to have opened the scoring in the first half with a free header from a corner. Darrell Hartley showed determination clearing off the line when a goal seemed certain.

1sts GAME OFF TODAY

Heavy overnight rain put paid to hopes of the Battle pitch being fit for today's visit of Hastings Rangers so the game has had to be postponed.
Rangers were contacted this morning but thier first team are at home so we couldn't switch the fixture even if their pitch were deemed fit.
This is only the 2nd game lost to the weather this season. With only 9 league games left, fixtures are still well ahead of schedule and the enforced extra break will enable players to shed a few more Christmas pounds before the 3 really important games in January.
As yet the 2nd team game at Sandhurst is still ON. Anyone who wants to go out there to spectate should give me a call.

SNOW HITS BATTLE

The weather in Battle has put the home fixture against Hastings Rangers in some doubt. Watch this page for further news. It's very possible that the fixture is switched if the Hastings Road pitches are playable at Bulverhythe.
January has thrown up 3 very important fixtures for the 1st team.
Herstmonceux and Mayfield are games which we need to win if we are to continue to move up Division 2. Both teams have beaten us earlier in the season in very tight games that we felt we should have won.
Those games are followed on the 26th with our quarter-final of the Super Stitch Cup against White Knight.

Website Updates

Apologies for the length of time this has taken but all fixture details and players statistics are now fully updated for the seconds, along with 2nd Team Records created in the Club Records section (see 'Club Info').
If anyone can help, I need confirmation about the scorers against Nelson Tigers on 13/10 and Eastbourne Athletic on 27/10. At the moment I have them both down as Rob but if this is not the case please let me know (either grab me at training or send me an email).
