BRILLIANT FINISH
Magham Down were on the wrong end of a 6-0 thumping this afternoon as the front line Baptists were in no mood to finish the season slackly.
First half goals from Adam Gooch Rhys Bennett and Gary Walsh put the home side firmly in control and further goals from Adam Gooch Rhys Bennett and Jamie Crouch made certain of a superb end to the wonderful season.
Special mention fro Matt Lee and Jamie Crouch who worked tirelessly throughout the game on another hot afternoon that would even make an eagle wilt.
Battle miss out by just 2 points from winning the League but their form throughout the season has been impressive and they will now look forward to another strong season in Div 3 next year.
Many thanks to all the players who have contributed to the team this year...you are all heroes...well done!
...and a BIG THANKS to all those people behind the scenes who have helped to make this Club a fantastic place to play football.

TITLE CHASE FAULTERS IN BURNING SUN
BBFC I 2-2 Herstmonceux
Dispite second half goals from Adam Staplehurst and Adam Gooch, hopes of the League Division 3 title were exstinguished in scorching temperatures yesterday.
There was huge optimism at the start of the afternoon that 2 wins in the last 2 games would see Battle Baptists win their first League title, albeit on goal difference from St Helens.
Early chances came and went for the home team but it was Herstmonceux who opened the scoring after 15 minutes. A second Herstmonceux goal before half time left the churchmen with a mountain to climb.
Battle had in fact had the better of the half, creating chance after chance which the Herstmonceux keeper stopped with annoying regularity.
The men in orange showed huge determination after the break and were finally rewarded when Pete Cooper's pass scythed the 'Ceux back four for Adam Staplehurst to gallop unopposed and slot past the on rushing keeper with great aplomb.
Encouraged and refreshed, the home team began to dominate and press. Another defence splitting pass was jumped on this time by striker Adam Gooch who sprinted clear of the last man and cooly rounded the keeper to tap into an open goal, levelling the scores.
With 30 minutes still to play, it looked almost certain that the home team would complete an amazing come-back and set up a climactic last day match for the title.
Adam Staplehurst skied a volley from a promising position and substitute Ian Rafati's specultive 30 yarder flew just over the bar. To thier credit a tiring Herstmeon ceux side kept the ball well, playing neat triangles in midfield to make the Baptists work even harder.
In an all-or-nothing game for Battle, the dispairing sound of the final wistle also ended promotion hopes in a brilliant season that just faded in the final stretch.
Many congratulations to promoted teams St Helens and to Eastbourne Fishermen who together with Magham Down and Battle Rangers have made this a facinating and memorable season.
We will now take a day or two to recover from the disappointment and look forward to another great season in Division 3 in the knowledge that this is a great club in which to play football.
Happy Easter everyone!!!

1sts STUTTER IN RUN-UP
Battle Rangers 2-1 BBFC I
A 1st minute goal by Rhys Bennett started the evening off brilliantly for the BBFC 1st team tonight but 2 second half goals by Rangers pinched the points.
It could have been very different with Matt Lee clipping the top of the bar in the 1st half and Max Sztyber shooting high from close range just before the break. Pete Cooper hit the post in the secoend half and Andy Poulter kept the game alive with a superb penalty save. The Baptists piled on the pressure at the end of the game, but they couldn't break the Rangers' defence to score.
The defeat means that to win the League the 1sts will have to do it the hard way, by winning their last 2 games of the season, starting with Herstmonceux at the Rec on Saturday (3pm KO).
Training will take place as usual at Claverham on Wednesday 27th.

THIS COULD BE OUR YEAR!!!
BBFC I 4-1 EASTBOURNE FISHERMEN
What a great result!!! Goals from Pete Cooper, Adam Staplehurst, Andrez Lopez-Munos and Rhys Bennett secured a win that throws the cat amongst the pigeons in Division 3 and maintains our outside hope of winning the title this year.
I'm told it could have been 5-0 by half time with the number of chances we created but, whatever - even a 1 goal win would have been great.
We need to keep our heads clear in the final run-in. None of the 3 games left will be walk-overs. However, the squad will be boosted by the return of Nic Gooch, Ollie Jeffs, Alan Cowley and Adam Gooch. There's still much to do but it now feels like it's a real possibility.
What helped our cause was the deafeat of St Helens yesterday 4-3 to Battle Rangers, who I believe scored 2 goals in the last 5 minutes to turn aound the result in our favour. That means that St Helens have finished the season on 40 points and Fishermen have ended with 39. We have 34 with 3 games left and a better goal difference than St Helens.
It's all in our own hands - what an exciting season...and it's still not decided!

RECORD BREAKING 1STS
BBFC I 9-1 BEULAH BAPTISTS
The 1st team cracked in nine goals this afternoon to secure a record-breaking win against Beulah Baptists at Calverham.
Goals from Adam Gooch(2), Andrez Lopez-Munoz(2), Ollie Jeffs(2), Rob Jordan, Matt Lee a Beulah own goal together with a penalty save from goalkeeper Tim Nunn keep alive the aim of promotion and importantly increased the team's goal difference to 24 in the final stages of the season.
With no game next weekend the team gets a rest before playing 3 games in 8 days on Sat 16th (Eastbourne Fishermen), Wed 20th (Battle Rangers), and Sat 23rd. The season ends with a fixture on Sat 30th April (Magham Down). All the remaining gems will be played at Battle Rec.

SATURDAY'S FIXTURE SWITCHED
Saturday's first team game against Beulah Baptists has been switched to a 2pm KO at CLAVERHAM.
Posted by: Gary Walsh
Sunday 27th March 2010
AVAILABILITY FOR FINAL GAMES
To help the problem of fixture congestion at the rec (and to play on a better playing surface) we're looking into the posibility to play Saturday's game against Beulah Baptists at Claverham rather than the at the rec. I imagine this will suit all 4 teams involved...we'll have news shortly on that one.
All the remaining fixtures through to the end of the season can be seen by clicking the FIXTURE DETAILS tab.
One or two players spoke to me yesterday about their availability for specific dates. Unfortunately I wasn't very receptive so please email or text me with the detail. We have about 18 players in the frame during April and I want to involve everyone. I can only do this effectively if everyone lets me know the dates they can't play so I need your help.
There's a mouthwatering climax to the season when Magham Down visit us on Sat 30th April. If all goes well, this game, which has now been moved from Easter Monday afternoon, will be a crucial promotion game for both teams.
Eastbourne Fishermen beat St Helens again yesterday and now have just one game left to play - that's against us on Sat 16th April. We need to win that game to have a chance of overtaking them. Similarly we could do with St Helens and Magham down dropping more points - they play each other this coming Saturday.
We're fast approaching the end of the season so players need to start thinking about the Presentation Do. Player's Player, Sportsman, Young Player, Goal of the Season, Clubman etc all need your vote pretty soon. Start thinking.
Yesterday's result was disappointing but as you can see, we've still got everything to play for in our last 5 games. It's so tight that goal difference may come into play as well. It's just the right time of the season for Adam Gooch to be returning and for Ollie, Stapes and Rafa to be back too.

1STS FAIL TO CRACK CRANBROOK
BBFC I 1-3 Cranbrook
With Fisherman beating St Helens, the 1sts missed the chance to gain some ground on the former pace setters. The welcome return of Rafa and Adam Staplehurst from uni and Adam Gooch from injury, and the momentum from the previous week; the prospects were good.
But Battle couldn't start like they finished last week; being put under the cosh right from the off, having to defend a succession of corners. The visitors drew the first blood after a header from a corner hit the under-side of the bar and in. The lead was doubled after a run from the left wing left Cranbrook with only the goal to beat. Battle needed to act fast or face a humiliation and they clawed one back on the stroke of half time where a Matt Lee flick was met by an Andreas reaction shot to pull the Baptists back in the game.
The late goal gave something to build on as Baptists looked to start again in the second half. Some flashes of the team's ability with 1-2s from Rafa and Rhys and bulldog determination from Matt and Andy. But it was all in vein as the visitors slammed the door shut on any comeback after the striker twisted and turned through players and finished with a superb solo effort to clinch the match. The additions of Adam Gooch, Ian Rafati and Erik Chappman couldn't change a faltering display, however, it was a blip in an otherwise so far impressive season.

BAPTISTS OUT OF CUP
BBFC I 1-2 Battle Rangers
After 3 weeks out it was back to action for the firsts in the quarter final derby day against Battle Rangers. The recent weather had been kind to the pitch, leaving only a bit of bobble to contend with. Baptists were hoping to turn around their recent run of poor form and went into the game with every confidence of a strong performance. Both teams started steadily but as the game grew, so did Baptists confidence.
Rhys and Pat were able to take on their defenders and cause problem both on and off the ball. Andrez was using his continental pace and skill to dance through defenders and Alan using his experience height and strength to become an aerial threat. Matt Lee and Andy Mills were anchors in a congested midfield and the defence demonstrated their attacking potential as well as their defensive duties. Despite this solid start Rangers un-did all the home-sides hard work scoring first.
Spirits weren't dampened and the oranges ploughed on creating more and more pressure, often camping in the oppositions half. The equaliser finally came when good work from Dave and Alan left Andres with the ball on the wing. The twinkle-toed striker dodged and weaved his way through defenders before firing past the keeper.
The equaliser meant the game was fresh going into the second half with everything to play for. The Baptists continued the pressure as Rhys and Pat continued to have the better of their markers. Alan and Andrez causing problems for the defence and the two central players even joining in the shooting honours. Rangers went down to ten men following a second bookable offence from a defender. When it looked certain that the Baptists would break the deadlock 10 men of Rangers scored the winner when a deflected shot looped over an otherwise effective Andy Poulter. Injuries to Pat and Rhys meant Gary pushed up front, and Doug Cox and Ollie Jeffs were down the flanks working tirelessly.
The sound of the final whistle spelled the end of any cup ambitions for the Baptists, but a spirited display should give the church side confidence to take into the next game.

2NDS WIN AT HAWKHURST!!
A fantastic four-goal flurry by Rob Usherwood secured a comfortable win for ther 2nds yesterday. Returning from a long absence from football, Rob scored a second half hat-trick to add to the goal he scored in the first half, giving the 2nds consecutive wins in the League.
The 1st team faired less well, beaten 2-1 by Battle Rangers in the quarter final of the Hastings Junior Cup. Although we played really well and looked the better side for much of the game, it was an unpleasant game with several bookings for the opposition and one sending off. However it's goals that count and Rangers scored one more than us :( Their winner came about 10 minutes from the end of normal time when a wayward shot took an enormous deflection to cross the goal-line. This after Andrez had equalised in the 1st half with a superb finish.

BAPTISTS BLOWN AWAY
Magham Down 2-0 BBFC I
After two disappointing performances in Cup competitions it was back to business in the League for the firsts this week. This was no game for the purists and two well-matched teams battled out as best they could on a pitch that resembled a well chewed sheep field and in wildly windy conditions.
With the wind behind them the Baptists made the better start with Rhys and Pete managing to get the better of their opposite number on the flanks, well-supported by full backs Erik and Dave.
For the first 20 minutes the visitors threatened a goal, with missed chances from Alan, Rhys and two strong long range strikes from Erik and Matt.
looking like a team that had refound its form, Battle pressed for the opener only to see their hard work undone when Magham scored from a corner on a rare excusion into thier opponent's half. This seemed to deflate Battle who took no further advantage of the gusty conditions and Magham successfully defended their lead to half time.
With the strong wind now in their face and the pitch not not favouring the passing game, Battle struggled to mount attacks whilst Magham used 'local knowledge' to push for a second. Keeper Tim Nunn saved bravely at the feet of a striker, keeping his side in the game but was injured in the clash.
As time dwindled and the Baptists tried to get men forward, the home side finally sealed the 3 points, Tim again making a great save before the striker profitted from the rebound.
Battle will learn from their away trip to Magham down and can be encouraged by a better spirited performance which reflects a typical wintery Division 3 top-of-the-table tussle. More of that will be expected next week when they meet Battle Rangers in the Quarter-Final of the Hastings Junior Cup which ensures that at least one Div 3 side will progress to the semi-final stage. KO 1:30pm at the Rec.

BBFC CRASH OUT
Battle Baptists 2-8 Christchurch (Ware)
National Christian Trophy – 3rd Round - Sat 29th Jan
Christchurch got off to the perfect start, scoring after 5 minutes when they were awarded a penalty for a tackle inside the area.
Battle fought their way back into the game back with determination and flair, scoring twice in 5 minutes to take a 2-1 lead. Dan Ahmet slid a pass through the visitors defence for Adam Gooch to run onto and fire past the keeper to equalise before Gooch scored a second, receiving the ball on the 18 yard line and tucking the ball inside the post.
Having held on firm to their lead, the match turned inside added time at the end of the half. A crisp shot from the edge of the area equalised the scores before a Christchurch striker nodded in from a left wing cross to leave the home team licking their half-time wounds.
This is the point where I want to stop writing the report or report a different second half performance. The truth is that we were never really on our game in the second half and our visitors ran away with the game to win worthily.
We've had a great run in the NCT, the highlight being our away win in Coventry. Now it's back to local issues and Magham Down away next week. We wish Christchurch the very best in the Quarter Finals.

Sun 16th January 2010
Elim Eagles (Coventry) 2-3 Battle Baptists (East Sussex)
A momentous (but windy) day for the club as the first team advanced through to the 3rd round of the National Christian Cup thanks to two goals from Dan Ahmet and one from Pete Cooper. The only sadness to the day was the shoulder injury to Dan Ahmet which caused ligament damage and may require surgery...please keep this in your prayers until we hear news in the next few days.
Filled up on a dieticians dream of pre-match burgers and bacon baps (just like the stars) and raring to go after a month of not playing together, Battle came to Coventry with more supporters than the home team and were optimistic of a good result.
But the high spirits were brought crashing down when an Eagles player swooped in behind the Battle defence to coolly slot in the opener and the penny suddenly dropped that it was time to wake up after the long journey up.
Battle went searching for the equaliser spreading the ball down both puddle filled flanks and stretching an uncertain Eagles' defence. Chances from Adam Gooch, Daniel Ahmet and Gary Walsh just missing the target until a long ball from Dave Mills found Daniel Ahmet being squeezed and eventually flattened by two defenders but not before poking it past the keeper.
A resurgent Battle quickly followed when a quickly-taken free-kick from crafty midfielder Adam Gooch found Dan's feet again. The twinkle-toed striker skilfully skipped between two defenders and tapped past the oncoming keeper to double the lead, with just 25 minutes played. Eagles responded immediately and should have capitalised when they had five players against Rhys, Rob and Andy but could only manage a side-netting.
Having had their usual home venue taken by a Fun Run, the hosts were able to hire the superb facility at Bablake School Pavilion with its billiard table playing surface. However the wind gusted strongly throughout the game, making conditions very difficult and both teams should be credited for their attempts to play good football.
With a one goal lead, and the wind now behind the them, Battle controlled the second half pinning the ball at the far end of the pitch then switching direction quickly to create space. Double goal-scorer Daniel Ahmet was replaced early on in the half after taking a second big tumble on his shoulder, Ian Rafati replacing him upfront to keep the pace of the attack.
As Battle continued to press, a long range pistol shot from centre half Nic Gooch was painfully blocked by an innocent defender, who sacrificed his dignity to prevent a certain goal. At the end of a brilliant passing move, Battle had another chance to wrap the game up when a cross from Rhys Bennett found Gary Walsh with the gaping goal at his mercy, but the veteran striker saw his shot fly disappointingly wide.
Eric Chapman came on for a productive Pat Mammone pushing Pete Cooper onto left midfield. Within minutes Pete had created the third goal for himself after forcing the Elim keeper into an error and being chopped down by an anxious defender. The Battle player showed great composure stepping up to calmly place his spot kick into the empty side of the net, having clearly read the golakeeper’s wildly premature movements.
The ever-effective Rhys Bennett was replaced by the industrious Matt Lee who immediately got stuck in with a typically stern performance adding to the strength of the Battle midfield, but Elim managed to pull one back when the ball struck the hand of an Eagles' striker and fortuitously landed perfectly at his feet to smash home unhindered. With just 2 minutes on the clock, and the home team throwing caution to the wind the travelling supporters were left hanging in suspense before the referee blew the final whistle to relieve their anxiety. Battle had successfully managed to run down the clock to finish the job with a solid performance from everyone.
The whole day was a fantastic testimony to the Club, with so many people playing their small part to make the day such a memorable and enjoyable experience.
A big thank you to our hosts who worked hard to find a superb venue for the game and offered excellent refreshments afterwards before setting off home.
And a special thanks to Gary Wenham, Gary Williams and Ian Nunn for driving the long journey and to Andy Garlick, Andy Oliver, Tim Nunn, Ania Kasztelanic and Andres Lopez-Munos for making the long journey to support the boys in orange.

TRAINING RESUMES WED 5TH JANUARY
Training is back to normal on Wednesday 5th January. That's 6:30pm at Claverham.
Fixtures are out for most of January - I've updated the FIXTURES pages. We're still awaiting fixtures for the 29th Jan but I'm pretty certain that the 1sts have a Hastings Junior Cup Quarter Final tie against either Battle Rangers or Northiam depending on the outcome of their match on the 8th Jan.
It looks like the 2nds don't have a game on January 15th which is great news because players may want to come and support the 1sts in Coventry!!!
Note that the 1sts are playing their home game against Herstmonceux at Claverham on the 8th, NOT at the Rec. This enables the Battle Rangers v Northiam game to take place at the Rec.
Please let one of the Garys know if you will not be available for any of these dates. Thank You.

BOTH GAMES CANCELLED
The snow has put paid to both our games tomorrow. There was an amazingly fierce 30 minute snow blizzard in Battle today which left a layer of snow on the ground.
Hawkhurst rang to cancel this evening and there's even more prolonged snow forcast for Saturday afternoon.
With no games scheduled for the next 2 Saturdays, our next games will be on 8th January. Fixtures for January haven't been released yet.
May you keep the Lord Jesus as your focus over the Christmas period and stay fit for a prosperous New Year.

A GOOD WIN
Battle Baptists II 2 - 0 Orington II
It was great to be back to a match day although it started off with delays and uncertainty about the squad with some players delayed through work and one awol.
Once we had kicked off we took 10 minutes to settle down. As usual we had spoken about making the easy pass, providing options for the player with the ball, angles and using our brains. Well that took 25 minutes but once it came we started to get on top.
Stuart and Jamie were always solid in midfield and gradually won their battles and started to find outlets to left and right. Dom hugged the touchline when we started to win consistent ball down the left and he created some good possession in the last third. Tom Holdaway was out on the right and our use of Tom was slow in the first half.
Up front we started as if we had two individuals who had never played together before. We needed easy passes and early but this was slow to appear. We had the beating of their back four but got bogged down early on as we tried too hard to beat everyone on our own.
Through out the first half our back four of Darren, James, Leon and Ian looked firm and solid. It was nice to see James making some great headers and all defenders making good challenges, not diving in and being strong, and moving up as a complete line once we had cleared from defence - well done. Ray was dominating his area, moving well as a final sweeper and talking well to back four.
AND we were ALL talking - positive & encouraging
Gradually we got on top. A slick piece of work in their half involving our midfield saw the ball end up with Bruno on left side of their box, he moved the ball a little to left of his marker to smash a great left footed shot into top corner.
Our confidence immediately grew.
We started the easy passes, moving, talking and making some strong challenges which was nice to see us making rather than being on receiving end.
The second half saw us start playing confidently with Tom being often found as our outlet down the right with good supporting play from Daz.
Dom kindly made way for Andy O to come on with Jacko dropping back to left midfield. Andy was focussed and quickly fell in with our improved passing and making angles and options and he teamed up well with Bruno exchanging passes.
We were on top but we were creating a few half-chances. Some good work by midfield saw us winning the ball deep in their half, Bruno looked right, passed left and slipped Jamie in on the left of their box. Jamie took it slighly wider and slid in a great low shot to make it 2-0. More chances followed but it remained 2-0.
We were on top in all areas and they rarely caused much of a problem, but when they did threaten Ray was very solid and Ian C must be mentioned for his determination and strength against a far bigger opponent.
It was great to see the enthusiasm return to the team. Remember all the good things we did and do them again against the tough teams we will face in next few weeks.
Carry on working for eachother and we can do well.

RETURN TO WINNING WAYS
After the recent bad weather had caused a break in routine, it was a great day for the Club yesterday, with the 1st team winning at Beulah and the 2nd team earning a well deserved home win against Orington.
A superb free kick by Adam Gooch opened the scoring for the 1sts and a superbly finished goal from captian Andy Mills sealed the result before Rhys Bennett iced the cake with a cool lob.
At Claverham, Bruno de Lima notched a goal before his move back to Brazil and Jamie Crouch wrapped up a welcome win half way through the second half.

BAPTISTS OVERCOME BAPTISTS
Beulah Baptists 0-3 Battle Baptists I
After 2 weeks off due to poor weather, the first team came into the game fresh, rested and raring to get back into action. It saw an encounter with the recently improving Beulah Baptists on another excellent Bullverhythe surface.
Battle took the lead within the first few minutes after they were awarded a free-kick inside the area from a Beulah back-pass. Adam Gooch skilfully found the top right corner to put the visitors ahead early.
From here both teams made it hard work for themselves and each other in a scrappy midfield battle. Missed chances from Alan Cowley, Daniel Ahmet and Rhys Bennett increased the frustration of the first half whilst at the other end Tim Nunn stood firm when called upon. But it was a fairly quiet first half from both teams.
The second half opened with both teams seeming to come out with a different attitude to the first. Battle adopting a slower paced and calm approach whereas Beulah upped their game in an attempt to salvage something from the match. This increased pressure saw the defence more involved but like so many times this season, standing firm and in control of the situation. Tim Nunn again doing everything right between the posts to keep this clean sheet.
It wasn't until around half way through the second half until Battle started to advance into the home sides territory with chances from Alan Cowely and Adam Gooch still not finding the back of the net.
All that changed when Andy Mills fired one in from the edge of the area to double the lead. Some good work down the right hand side from Pete Cooper and an advancing Dave Mills saw many chances created but not converted. But Battle were pressing against a tiring Beulah defence. A solid performance from the team was wrapped up when Rhys Bennett latched onto a through ball from Pete Young to lob the keeper off his line.
A good solid return after the break as Battle show no signs of letting up their good form.

BOTH GAMES OFF SATURDAY
The heavy snow has put paid to our hopes of playing football this weekend.
Following advice from the ESFL we've cancelled the games early with no hope of a thaw before Saturday.
Temperatures are set to rise after the weekend so there's a good chance we'll be back to normal by the following Saturday when both teams are away. The 1sts play Beulah at Bexhill Road whilst the 2nds travel to Eastbourne to play Eastbourne Rangers.
Make sure you tell your manager if you are NOT available for Saturday 11th and check the website on Monday to make certain your name is in the right list.

NO TRAINING TONIGHT!
Training is cancelled tonight (Wednesday 1st Dec).
Claverham was shut today and the tennis courts are full of snow. There's even more snow on the way tonight so even with an orange ball I don't think we could manage to play.
We're planning as usual for 2 games at the weekend. Realistically it's unlikely that the pitches will be fit but don't plan alternative arrangements until you hear from us. We'll post the squads for the 2 games by Thursday evening.
Watch the website for further news.

CHRISTIAN TROPHY NEWS
It's 7:45am Saturday morning. The first team are all gathered around eating their bacon bap, drinking coffee, and listening to a good wishes text message from Ania, our number 1 fan, when my mobile rang and the nubmingly disappointing news came through that the game had been called off.
Overnight snow and freezing temperatures in Coventry had left the pitch with no chance of being fit for the afternoon. Although the opposition players volunteered to attempt a pitch clearance, Saturday's weather forcast was for more snowy conditions, making driving too risky and playing practically dangerous. So common sense dictated and the game was postponed
.
The weather in December and January may also prove difficult for a rearrangement but it's not likely to be as bad as this weekend. Both teams have already been given fixtures up to Xmas so the most likely date for the fixture is Saturday 15th January. I'll let you know as soon as we've confirmed.
A big thanks to Gary Williams for sorting out the minibus and to Pam & Tony for the Saturday breakfast. The day wasn't a total wipeout since we had 2 hours of 5-a-side at Claverham and lunch at the Senlac before going to watch the 2nds play in the afternoon. The day ended fittingly at the 50th Birthday Bash of our hardworking secretary. Here's to another 50 years Gary!

IMPORTANCE OF THE CROSS
Those of you that know me as a Christian believer are probably thinking that I'm about to talk about how Jesus gave his life on the cross so that the whole of mankind could live life to the full...
...but alas, I hope I'll be forgiven for talking about last Saturday's game against Hastings Rangers instead... The (footballing) point that I wanted to make is that we scored 3 goals, two of which came from crosses.
As a centre forward, I've been critical in the past that the wide players at Battle Baptists don't get the ball in the box with the frequency that I'd expect (...at my age there's a limit to the number of times you are able to make a gut-bursting, defender-losing 'spurt' into the area and there's no moment more disappointing than the moment you realise that the wide player has checked back into midfield without delivering the pass). However, you can't help but notice that all has changed this season.
Players are now chucking the ball into the area without looking to see who's in there...and we're scoring goals from this smart tactic.
Our first goal on Saturday wasn't scored by a BBFC player. It was an og...but the the defender who nodded the ball into his own net knew that he simply must try to intercept the ball before it landed on the striker's head. As a result, the error was forced and we took the lead.
Our third, and as it turned out, the winning goal was crossed to the near post and although the keeper was firm favourite to get to it first, our striker nipped in front and headed in.
What's really pleasing is that these two match-winning crosses came from the two youngest players in our team, Doug Cox and Rhys Bennett. As we go into the winter season of poor pitch conditions and slippery weather, this clever strategy will produce more goals.
So well done fellas and with snow on the forcast for this Saturday, maybe we'll be blessed with even more clever crossing into the danger area.

WALSH WINNER HALTS RANGER'S RUN
Hastings Rangers 2-3 BBFC I
Cup action saw the firsts travel to Bullverhythe where the pitch was in superb condition. That teamed with a cool air lead to the prospect of a fantastic game of football between 2 competitive sides. A welcome return to first team football from Doug Cox saw him slot in at left back and Alan Cowley doing a great job, filling in for the absent Rob Jordan at centre back.
Battle went into this game confident after knocking out higher league opponents in the first round and hoped to do the same this week. Both teams came out of the traps flying as the game established its physical nature early on, Rhys Bennett and Pat Mammone providing services from both wings, and Adam Gooch and Andy Mills getting stuck into a midfield battle.
Baptists drew the first blood after a long searching ball into the danger zone from Doug Cox saw a Rangers defender deny Gary a certain goal by taking the ball off the striker's head to direct the ball into his own goal. This gave Battle something to build on, and after a number of chances from both sides, it was Battle to push further in front. A counter attack saw a through ball from Daniel Ahmet to Rhys who was brought down on the very edge of the area. Adam Gooch casually slotted the ball to the left of the stranded keeper.
Rangers pushed from here until half time and after a 10 minute spell of attacking Battle's defence, they finally broke through. From here until the break they continued to pressure but it was Battle's defence who kept disciplined and Tim Nunn to provide good support in goal.
Hastings came into the second half all out attack in an effort to salvage their cup run. With Pat and Rhys having to be drawn into a more central role to compensate Rangers' formation. Again a break-away counter attack found Daniel who knocked it back for Rhys to produce a cross to the near post which found Gary to beat the keeper and increase Battles lead further. It was all or nothing as Rangers became more physical and seemed to push their way through Battles squad, determined to create something. A goal mouth scramble from a corner saw the ball trickle over the line to draw the deficit down to just one. Pete Young replaced a hardworking Doug Cox at left black to ensure the win.
Next week see's the long awaited away trip to Coventry in the National Christian cup with a home tie in the next round up for grabs.

FIRSTS COME BACK TO EARN POINT
Herstmonceux 3-3 BBFC I
After this weeks weather, it was just a bonus to be playing. The Herstmonceux pitch was very heavy with long grass, making the Baptists task even harder against a big and physical side. And ceux showed their physicality in the early few minutes, conceding free-kicks from big challenges.
Battle had a stumbling first half, with only glimmers of play that has been seen in recent weeks, but making the most of the pace from Daniel, Adam, Rhys & Pete to get forward. So it was the home side who drew the first blood with a goal that seemed to rock the Baptist players. The game was now an uphill battle which the visitors started to climb with great efforts from both strikers and left back Eric Chapman striking the cross bar. Eventually Battle had something to show for their efforts going into half time when a precision cross from Pete Cooper met Alan Cowley towering over his marker.
The goal just before the whistle gave the Baptists a spring board from which to improve on. However it was the home side again who pulled in front when the ball seemed to be knocked from Tim Nunns hands and tapped in, but Battles protests were in vein. Things went from bad to worse from Battle when a free kick found its way to an un-marked ceux player who finished calmly.
This seemed to flatten Battle and as Gary Walsh replaced an impressive first team debut Eric, and changed the formation to 3-4-3, it was do or die time. The tactical switch around seemed to work and with 15 minutes to go Rhys Bennett latched onto a through ball from Alan Cowley and chipped the keeper to end a drought lasting over a year.
This put the wind back in the sails and Battle were now pressing. Every player giving 110% to gain an equalizer as the home side started to wobble. The opportunity came when a Adam Gooch was brought down just inside the area after a jinking run. Pete Cooper continued his success from the spot, sending the keeper the wrong way. Battle were now throwing everything into a winner which at 3-1 just wouldn't have been imaginable. But it was in-vein. The result could be seen as 2 points lost, but coming from behind in the style they did should be claimed as one point very deservedly gained.

BBFC I 3-1 HAWKHURST
There were no slip-ups yesterday as our 1st team conyinued it's winning streak, comfortably beating Hawkhurst 3-1 at the Rec.
Matt Lee celebrated his 21st birthday on Friday night then showed up to score 2 goals for his team, sliding in an open goal to give the Baptists the lead on 5 minutes before finalising the result half way through the second half.
In between his goals Hawkhurst put up fighting resilience. They levelled the scores in the first half through Tom Sawyer and created two other fine chances that were stopped brilliantly by Andy Poulter in the Battle goal.
Striker Alan Cowley restored the home team's lead before half time, superbly volleying in a right-wing cross from just inside the area.
There were some notably good performances from the Hawkhurst players. As always Chris Golding showed his experience orchestrating the midfield whilst Jamie Young looked lively attacking from wide areas.
However, the Baptists created many chances and should have scored more goals. Dan Ahmet continues to impress up front and Rhys Bennett gets better each week - though both players narrowly missed having carved themselves guilt-edged opportunities.
We've never had a 'Save of the Season' award at BBFC - possibly because the goalkeepers mantlepiece would be filled to capacity, but Andy Poulter's save would be a contender as the nimble veteran reacted like a firework rocket to tip a shot over the bar in the dying moments.
The win puts us back up at the top of the Division with games in hand on leaders Eastbourne Fishermen who beat Herstmonceux 5-2, and 2nd placed St Helens who were in cup action yesterday.

SIGNS OF IMPROVEMENT
The second string of Battle Baptists came away with nothing, despite a much improved performance against league leaders Eastbourne Rangers. A goal in each half from Rangers ensured they claimed all 3 points to maintain their push for promotion. It became clear early on why Rangers top the division. They are a very well organised side, with a strong defence and two quick and lively strikers.
The Baptists were bouyed by the return of Rob Fairy in defence enabling Staurt Batchelor to return to his more familiar midfield role. The home side started brightly and were competeing on level terms with Rangers. Chances were hard to come by for both sides. Rangers took the lead on the half hour when Alan Baldy got on the end of a near post corner with a glancing header. Shortly afterwards, the Baptists had a good shout for a penalty turned down when Dom Cooper-Fowler was clattered in the area.
Despite competing well, the concern for the Baptists at half time was a lack of chances created. We needed to hold onto the ball better when in attacking positions and look to bring other players into play.
The job was made harder 7 minutes into the second half. A needlessly given away penaly was converted by Julian Waters for 2-0. To their credit the Baptists continued to compete and create half chances. Opportunity of the game came when Rob Usherwood broke through the defensive corden to be in on goal. He placed the ball wide of the keeper only to be denied by an excellent diving save.
This was a good performance against good opposition. As the headline says...'signs of improvement'.
We are now half way through the season having played 9 league games and collected just 8 points. The next two league games against Robertsbridge and Herstmonceus are crucial. Win them both and we start to move up the league and on towards a top half finish - a target that should be well within our reach.

COVENTRY HERE WE COME
News came through on Tuesday that Elim Eagles beat CS Utd 4-1 last Saturday and so we're off to Coventry on November 27th to play Elim in the next round of the National Christian Trophy.
We've booked the minibus - the plan is to set off early on Saturday morning and get up there for lunchtime. We haven't yet decided finally what will happen after the game but I'm thinking we'll probably stop off somewhere for a meal on the way back.
It's really exciting and gives us a chance to experience what it's really like to play football properly away from home.
Please pray for this day - that all the players travel well and arrive fit to play, and also that all the arrangements fall neatly into place.
It promises to be a great day out and I hope that the whole day will feel to us like a Cup Final outing...although I doubt whether we'll be playing anywhere near Wembley!

MANAGER'S THOUGHTS
I wish I had a pound for every time someone said to me "I wouldn't want your job having to pick the team each week". It's certainly true that I spend a lot of time thinking about the team and wondering what's best.
But over the last 8 weeks I've had a wonderful time! Not only has the team played so well, scoring goals for fun and defending so strongly, but the manner of our sportsmanship under extremely difficult circumstances has been simply superb.
So why has this happened this season, when essentially it's the same set of players that only managed one win in the League last season? Well it's not just because we've dropped down a division, though that has certainly helped to build confidence. The fact is that you cannot put good players onto a field and expect them to play well as a team straight away. It takes time for them to bed in and develop into a winning team.
The question is how to continue the winning stretch. We're approaching the winter monthes when pitches become heavy and styles of football will need to modify. We'll need a deep squad of matchfit players to cover for the injuries and unavailability that may hit.
This Saturday we have everyone (except Pat) available and I could select the same winning team. However, it's my intention to rest players from the starting lineup. This is the right thing to do (whenever I get the chance). Anyone carrying niggling injuries has the chance to recover or rest tired muscles. Importantly, other players get badly needed match time and build fitness by playing. This will benefit the team in the longrun.
So far, we have been so blessed. The team is developing a confident attitude where everyone is comfortable with the team, regardless of who plays in whatever position. We definitely need a strong SQUAD of players if the TEAM is to carry on doing well.
We've already broken the Clubs longest winning streak and who knows just what can be achieved this season. We've made a great start and have a chance to win cups, titles, trophies. But whatever happens, I thank God daily for the joy that football is bringing to the Club and I pray that we will continue to enjoy our football.

BAPTISTS IN 2ND ROUND OF NCT
BBFC I 4-2 UCF
The first team scored four times in the first half of yesterday's National Christian Trophy to see their way through to the National stages.
Adam Gooch scored twice, with Daniel Ahmet and Pete Cooper also netting in a first half that saw keeper Tim Nunn make two brillaint saves to deny the visitors a goal.
UCF changed their formation at half time, throwing the kitchen sink at the stout Battle defence. Tim Nunn saved a penalty before UCF pegged back two deserved goals to reduce the deficit by full time.
The team are now eagerly awaiting news of their next opponents which will involved an away tie in either Surrey or Coventry.

NEWS
Yesterday's 2nd Round 5-3 home win over Magham Down in the Wisden Sports Challenge Cup sets up a mouthwatering Quarterfinal tie against Division 2 leaders Sandhurst in January.
Sandhurst, who dropped their first points of the season yesterday drawing 2-2 at Crowhurst will be odds on favourites to progress. However, having already beaten Division 2 opposition this season, the tie gives us another giant-killing opportunity and we'll fancy our chances to upset the form book.
The winners will meet either Eastbourne Fishermen or Hollington IIIs in the Semi.
I apologise that there are no new pictures from yesterday's game. Truth is, I was enjoying the game so much I forgot to get the camera out.

GOALS AT LAST
Sandhurst II 2 - 4 Battle Baptist II
Two goals each from strikers Kyle (Jacko) Jackson and Bruno De Lima gave the Baptists second string a much needed kick start to their season.
Sandhurst had worked hard on their pitch over the summer, moving it away from the trees down one side, and improving the playing surface. Given the mud baths we had encountered in previous visits, this was an impressive surface to play on and a credit to the club.
The Baptists started brightly, holding the ball up in midfield and feeding neat passes to the front two. A number of chances were spurned as a lack of composure in front of goal looked to prove costly.
The first goal came on 20 minutes. Jacko cleverly evaded a high defensive line to run clear and slot cooly past the Sandhuest keeper. Sandhurst remained competetive and well organised. Sometimes careless passing and decision making by the Baptists, put them under pressure to easily.
Sandurst drew level on the stroke of half time. A free header from a corner saw the ball loop up and dip just under the crossbar.
Dom Cooper-Fowler was on for the injured Darren Wilkinson as the second half got under way. Playing in an unfamiliar right midfiled slot, Dom aquitted himself well, perhaps inventing a new role for himself in the squad?
The Baptists continued to press, but were not creating many clear cut openings. An inablity to keep the ball well and recycle where necessary meant that attacks often fizzled out.
The game was almost made safe in a two minute spell half way through the second period. A header from Jacko restored the lead and Bruno got clear from the defence, rounding the keeper to score. To their credit, Sandhurst never gave up. They reduced the deficit on what we thought was the final minute. Too many Baptist players got caought forward. Possession was lost and a Sandhurst defender was allowed to bring the ball dangerously into the Baptists half. Confusion reigned and the ball found a Sandhurst striker who finished well.
The referee had managed to find 10 minutes of overtime. During that preiod Bruno worked another good opening with Jacko and finished well to secure a much needed win.

MAGHAM DOWN AND OUT
Battle Baptist I 5-3 Magham Down
On a day where we experienced all the seasons of weather, another spirited display against a physical Magham down meant the Baptists progressed further in the Wisdens Sports Challenge Cup. Adam Staplehurst was called in to fill the gap left by an absent Nic Gooch and Daniel Ahmet earning a starting place along-side Adam Gooch.
Battle started strongly with Rhys Bennett over-running his defender with pace and Pete Cooper with his skill and control. Matt Lee and Andy Mills getting stuck into a predictable tough battle. However a momentary lapse of concentration lead to Magham being ahead and left the Baptists dumb-struck. But it only spurred them on as many chances came and went until finally Ollie Jeffs Bundled the ball across the line after a goal line scrap from a Adam Gooch corner. This only spurred us on as Adam Gooch continued his fine form in front of goal with a cheeky chip over the keeper from a great piece of play from Daniel Ahmet. Then Dan bagged one of his own with a goal of the season contender, reminiscent of Gazza's famous goal against Scotland. But, a few minutes from the end, a quickly taken free kick into an un-organised box lead to the opposition pulling one back. (controversy as to whether it was an own goal by Matt by last weeks hero Pat).
The second half saw an opportunity for Battle to shut the game out. A rejuvenated Magham were trying to force the issue but the defence stood firm. Daniel Ahmet continued to run the defence riot with his jinking runs and he had another assist to his name as he made his way into the area; performing the dreaded cut-back to Matt Lee who claimed Battles forth. Several penalty shouts were turned away until one was finally awarded when Adam Gooch was brought down by the last man. Reliable Pete Cooper stepped up, but the keeper dived to his left to only fumble the ball, where Adam Stapplehurst claimed the follow-up in what was later described as a 'planned move'. All Battle had to do now was defend their goal until the final whistle. which for the majority of the time they managed, however another moment of confusion lead to the ball deflecting over Andy Poulters head. However this did not deter the home side as they did enough to prevent anymore damage and should once again how they have been in such prolific form this season. Next week they begin their path in the National Christian cup at Claverham.

ANOTHER GREAT WIN.
Battle Baptist I 5-3 Battle Rangers
Two goals apiece from Pete Cooper and Adam Staplehurst and one from goal-a-game-Gooch (Adam) gave us another great win against one of the best teams in Division 3 yesterday at the Rec.
We got off to a slow start and Rangers looked the brighter of the teams in the first 20 minutes before Adam Staplehurst nodded in from close range.
After Rangers had levelled the score, Matt Lee was legged up in the box and Pete Cooper notched the spot kick.
The spirited Rangers side came back again before Staplehurst poked a toe for his second goal to give the Baptists a slender half time lead.
Within moments of the restart the Rangers keeper pick up a back pass 8 yards out and free kick specialist Adam Gooch calmly stroked in to give the 'home' team breathing space.
Substitute Dan Ahmet caused Rangers problems with trickery and pace and when he was brought down in the box, Pete Cooper stepped up to seal the game with his second penalty of the game.
Still Rangers showed great determination and even when reduced to 10 men, they reduced the deficit thanks to a well-drilled own goal from a Baptist player (no name, no pack drill...or is that Pat Drill).
Three teams have now broken away at the top of Division 3. St Helens won 1-0 at Magham Down who we play in the cup next week, whilst Eastbourne Fishermen (who have had a point taken away from them for a yet-unknown reason) won 2-0 at Hollington.
I'm planning my teams for the next two saturdays so let me know if you can't play in either of thse games. Next week we're at home to Magham Down who always put up stiff competition and the following week we play at Claverham in the 1st round of the National Christian Cup against Kent based United Churches Fellowship who play in the Bromley & Croydon Christian League.

TODAY'S NEWS
The great news from Paul Rook today is that he's successfully applied for a job in London and he starts next week. The job is a brilliant answer to prayer because it entails working in graphics with a Christian organisation - both aspects that are close to Paul's heart. Accommodtaion is provided and Paul moves up to London at the end of next week.
Sadly for us this will mean that we'll not continue to have his footballing services - Paul has enjoyed a fantastic start to the season, making himself a regular on the right hand side of the first team either as a full back or in midfield. We're certain to miss him when he goes. Paul isn't available to play this weekend in the game against Battle Rangers but he will be at training on Wednesday if you want to say your farewells.
The other news that came through this week is that on the 30th October, the 1st team have a fixture in the National Christian Trophy. I was hoping to get an away trip but we've been drawn at home against United Churches Fellowship Reserves (Kent). They play in Div 2 of the Bromley & Croydon Christian League. See attached link.

The reward for safe passage to the next round will be an away fixture against either to CS United (Surrey) or Elim Eagles (Coventry) :)

90th MINUTE JOY
Eastbourne Fishermen 1-2 BBFC I (ESFL Div 3)
A top of the table clash met Battle on an unusually warm October day. Eastbourne Fisherman entered the game as in form leaders after a 9-1 landslide the previous week. Battle entered the game in much the same form, although this was to be considered the first real big test. The whole team were prepared to give 100%, not only for the 3 points, but for Dave’s bragging rights in a family tie!!
The early kick-off was met with even pressure from both sides, Battle riding each wave of attack as the Eastbourne players met a wall of orange each time they attacked. Battle created their chances too with Paul Rook attacking the right wing and Adam Staplehurst and Matt Lee providing long balls for the inform Adam Gooch to run onto. Breathing problems brought an end to Paul Rook's game early in the first half and as Battle called upon Rhys Bennett to replace him, they continued to attack and defend strongly until Adam Gooch was brought down on the edge of the area. The converted striker then stood up to repeat his free kick goal last week, slotting the ball in the bottom corner away from the keeper's stretching dive. This rattled Eastbourne's cages and they continued to attack in a physical and patient build-up but it was Battle who were to strike next as a long ball through the middle left Adam Gooch one on one with the keeper to again calmly slot home his second and his forth of the season.
The Baptists went into half time with a vital lead, knowing that the next 45 minutes was going to be a very gritty and defensive game. As expected Eastbourne came out of the traps flying with wave after wave of attack - Battle clearing ranks in all directions to relieve pressure.
Ollie Jeffs battled through injury (even managing an attempt on target) to help the impressive Rob Jordan, Nic Gooch and Dave Mills clear their lines. The build up of pressure meant there were very few opportunities for Rhys and Pete to get involved in the attacks down the wings..
Finally the determined defence was un-done at a corner when an Eastbourne player stayed in the box, evading the off-side appeal and nodding in as the line pushed out. This put them in attack mode as they threw more bodies forward in both open and set-piece play. Daniel Ahmet replaced Gary Walsh and did well in causing problems for the defence. Running the ball up the pitch and waiting from support from others. Late on in the second half a run through four Baptist players saw a good ball into the area and a chance to equalise, but Rhys Bennett came in to just do enough to put off the attacker as he seemed to miss an unmissable chance. Rhys was then replaced by Pat Mammone for the last few minutes.
In a climactic end to the game, Eastbourne won a penalty with seconds to go. Andy Poulter brilliantly saved the spot kick and as the penalty taken pulled back his foot to blast the rebound home, the final whistle sounded saving the Baptists from last minute disappointment.

MISSED OPPORTUNITIES - AGAIN!!
BBFC 2nd team lost their first game of the league campaign on a day when it could have been so different.
Away to Orington seconds on a dificult pitch at Netherfield Rec, it was another tale of missed chances proving to be the Baptists undoing. Whilst never on top form in the first half, I counted seven good chances created and spurned by the Baptists. The home side were organised and hungry and as the game went on with no goals, they became more confident and adventurous.
The deadlock was broken 10 minutes into the second half. A ball into the box was not cleared. It bounced up awkwardley and hit Stu Batchelors arm for a penalty which the home side duely converted. As Orington grew in confidence, what little confidence the Baptists had seemed to ebb away.
The home side secured the win on 42 minutes when a cross into the box not dealt with, landed at the feet of an Orington attacker who finished well.
Its not just a lack of goals giving cause for concern. In general there seems to be a real lack of desire and 'oomph' about the team, meaning that we are often second best in the important challenges. The squad is blessed with some very talented and skillfull players. As a group we need to step up the work rate and individually I'll be asking players to improve their motivation, concentration and desire to be successfull.
We need to turn our season around quickly, as very soon, any hope of finishing in the top two (a target well within us) will be out of reach.

1STS FORM CONTINUES
Goals from Matt Lee and Adam Gooch ensured that the 1st team continued its rich vein of form yesterday, making it 3 wins our of 4 in the East Sussex League Division 3. Hollington put up a combatative performance and were finally undone in the second half by a smartly finished strike from Matt on 60 minutes, secured 10 minutes later with a top notch free kick from Adam that flew inside the post from 25 yards.
As the rain came down, the Baptist team created other chances which on another day Gary Walsh, Alan Cowley and Rhys Bennett would almost certainly score whilst at the other end keeper Andy Poulter had a very quite game, being well guarded by a strong defensive display.
Next week the Baptists face their hardest challenge yet as they travel to top of the table Eastbourne Fishermen.

BATTLE BEAT DIV 2 OPPOSITION
BBFC I 3-2 Icklesham Casuals (Hastings Junior Cup)
Cup games always summon up a sense of excitement and unpredictability and a literal sense of 'winner takes all'. After Battle's crushing disappointment of un-deservedly losing to one goal in the previous week, a true test of character and commitment shone through against Division 2 opponents Icklesham Casuals. A week of yet more changes saw Adam Staplehurst replace the absent Paul Rook and Alan Cowley replace the university-bound Tim Walsh. Pete Cooper, Andy Oliver and Daniel Ahmet provided a strong attacking bench.
The first half consisted of a fairly even game, with both sides showing glimmers of chances. Both wingers were given time and space to attack the wing backs with their pace. Adam Staplehurst picked up the ball from around the half way line and did just that, beating off two defenders on a confident and strong run; and put the ball in the back of the net from the edge of the area. This put the confidence back into the home side as the defence again put in a strong performance. A welcome return to first team football from Dave Mills, another solid performance from Rob Jordan and Nic Gooch, and a soon to be departing Ollie Jeffs gave his usual sturdy show. However this did not mean that Andy Poulter had a quiet afternoon with a save of the game, saving a one on one with the attacker with his feet, onto the crossbar and out for a corner.
Alan Cowley quickly followed on Adam's example of attacking the defence and coolly slotted home the Baptists second.
The half-time instructions were 'keep it simple' to ensure the win. Again the second half started fairly even with both sides creating chances in a midfield battle. Both sides were aware of the importance of the next goal and but it was the visitors who scored it, scoring a breakaway goal.
Pete Cooper replaced the injured Rob Jordan which forced Adam Staplehurst into his familiar centre back position and shortly afterwards Gary Walsh was pulled down by a defender in the penalty area. Pete stepped up and coolly slotted the penalty homeward bound and the Baptists seemed to be home and dry with a two goal cushion. However, Icklesham were not to be beaten easily and as the home team took their foot off the gas, the visitors slotted in another counterattacking goal to cause an uncomfortable last 15 minutes.
With an injury to Adam Staplehurst and illness striking Rhys Bennett, the home side faded and extra time was looking a distinct possibility. Playing his first game for Battle, substitute Daniel Ahmet introduced a fresh pair of legs for the Baptist putting pressure on the opposition’s tiring defence and helping Battle to hold firm to progress into the next round and continue the bright start to the season continues.

MISSED OPPORTUNITIES
On a sparkling day for football and fielding 3 new signings Battle Baptists went out looking to get all 3 points against a Hawkhurst second team who had so far failed to register a win.
The day started well. On 5 minutes a corner to the far post was played back into the area and Jamie Crouch scored with a well taken volley. That however was as good as it got. The Baptists were pressing and looked the only team likely to score again. Hawkhurst were organised and determined and not making life easy for the home side.
On 19 minutes, Rob Ushrwood was in front of goal but his shot was just over the bar. Three minutes later a quick exchange of passes, saw him in on goal again, only for the keeper to make a good save. In bewteen that action, Hawhurst fashioned their first meaningful chance, when an attacker broke through the Baptist defence to be one on one with the keeper. The impressive Rob Fairy got back to make a last ditch tackle to preserve the lead.
Hawhurst grabbed a bizare equalizer on 28 minutes. A Baptist clearance into the centre circle was chested down by a Hawkhurst player who ambitiously lobbed the ball back goalwards on the volley. With the keeper of his line the hopefull attempt dipped just under the crossbar to level the scores.
That seemed to knock the wind out of the sails of the home side and the game went quiet for the remainder of the half.
The secong half prooved just as frustrating with the Baptists making all the running but failing to convert any chances. All three subs were used to no avail. In a bizare two minutes Rob Usherwood had a shot saved for a corner. From the resulting set piece, a header from Zach Smith came back off the crossbar and the same players follow up shot was saved by the feet of the keeper.
The home side and manager were becoming frustrated with descisions not going their way. Further chances came and went. A combination of wayward shooting, good goalkeeping and poor decision making meant that the Baptists were not able to score again.
Hawkhurst deserved their draw through a combination of good fortune, hard work and application. We only have ourselves to blame for not taking all three points and must put the dissapointment firmly behing us and look forward to another league fixture next week away to Orrington seconds.

EXTRA TIME AGONY
A defeat by the odd goal was our just reward for a lack lustre performance by BBFC 2nd's in this Eastbourne Coach Finishers Cup 1st round match.
Both sides were well organised but struggling to create any meaningful chances at either end. The first excitement came on 15 minutes when a clash of heads saw Brian Fitzgerald go down with blood pouring from a wound above his eye. After being patched up Brian bravely soldiered on.
Chances came, but with both strikers leaving their shooting boots at home, none were converted. West Hill utd openined the scoring 7 minutes into the second half, when their striker converted a one on one opprtunity with our goalie.
The Baptists continued to press for an equaliser, but despite a lot of huff and puff, a lack of creative play, meant chances were few and far between. With 5 minutes to play and a 1-0 defeat looking likely the impressive Like Barnes came forward with the ball, evading a couple of challenges on his way to the egde of the penalty area. His low shot found the corner of the net earning 30 minutes of extra time.
Extra time continued in the same vein with both sides struggling to create. The highlight of the first period was a free kick barely 10 yards past the half way line. Zach Smith unleashed a trademark shot that I'm sure was still rising as it narrowly missed the junction of upright and crossbar.
WestHill took the lead 2 minutes into the second period. Having failed to close down effectively in midfield, the subsequent cross was headed in for 2-1. That proved to be the deciding action, but the Baptists almost took the contest to penalties when with 2 minutes left, Rob Usherwood was through on goal, only to pull his effort wide.
A dissapointing result from a fixture we should / could have got something from. Encouraging performances from Luke Barnes and debutant keeper James Crane - room to improve for the rest!
We entertain Hawhurst Utd at Claverham on saturday, looking to maintain our positive start to the league programme.

TRAINING - BRING BOOTS AND TRAINERS
There's very little light in the evenings now so this week we'll be using both grass and tennis courts for our training. Get there as close to 6:30 as you can so that we can maximise the use of the field. Then we go up to the floodlit tennis courts for the rest of the time.
Claverham have applied for planning permission for floodlights on the new astroturf (the 'grass' is being laid today) but only up to 7pm. We're currently trying to secure the 6-7pm slot on a Wednesday but we'll still then need to decant to the tennis courts...We'll keep you posted on this one.

BAPTISTS' BEGINNING BLIGHTED
St Helens 1-0 BBFC I.
After the previous two week's successes, the Baptists were in good spirits and brimming with confidence going into this game. However they knew that no game is an easy game and would have to work hard once again if they were to emulate their recent success. Gary Walsh filling in for the absent Alan Cowley up front, Dave Mills and Andy Poulter returning to first team action; the team was once again strong.
The First half saw end to end action in a physical and fast paced game, with both keepers seeing a fair share of the action. However Battle seemed to be the more well oiled machine with good passing between each other. This coupled with the space being created for each other saw plenty of chances created.
Good triangle movements reminiscent of the Arsenal invinsibles in the attacking positions, left chances by Matt Lee, Adam Gooch, Gary and Tim Walsh. Paul Rook joined the attack dominating the right wing with his pace and strength. However St Helens also pressed hard but the visitor's defence stood firm with a shining performance from Rob Jordan. Both teams went into half time without a goal (which was frankly astonishing given the amount of chances).
A lot of positives came out of the first half which put the team raring to go for the second half. However St Helens made changes early in the second half which seemed to un-nerve the away side. Battle continued to create chances. After a Baptist corner, St Helens broke and capitalised on the team not being able to get back in time. This put battle into attack mode, with the gung-ho attitude that was seen against Cranbrook. Natt Nunn and Pat Mammone replaced the hard-working Gary Walsh and Paul Rook and threw the two wingers further up the field.
With effectively a 4 man attack Battle pressed for the last ten minutes, winning key free-kicks and corners and throwing everything forward. Unfortunatly it wasn't enough. As the Ref drew the game to a close the Baptists came off defeated but not de-moralised as pride was taken from the hard-working performance of all involved.

FIRSTS CONTINUE 100% START
Hollington 1-4 BBFC I
After a battle cry from the manager at training still ringing in the ears of the Baptists, stand-in manager Rob Jordan urged for simplicity and for the team avoid complacency following the success of previous weeks..
Despite an aggravated injury to Adam Gooch causing Pete Cooper to step in on the right wing,
Battle started well with this mentality, keeping disciplined at the back, using the ball well and involving the forwards in well created plays and this style of play lead to the Baptists creating chances from the left, right and centre - Matt Lee bursting through the middle to capitalise on a defensive error forced by Tim Walsh, and coolly slotting the ball past the keeper. This put the wind in the sails for Battle. Some good moves evolved down both flanks; Rhys Bennett, Tim Walsh and Ollie Jeffs causing problems down the left whilst Pete Cooper, Paul Rook and Alan Cowley created chances down the right. Matt Lee and Andy Mills enjoyed the physical battle through the middle and Rob Jordan and Nic Gooch cleared things up at the back. This disciplined and intelligent play lead to Matt Lee bagging in his second and Alan Cowley shortly added to the score sheet when a long range effort slipped through the keepers hands, into the goal.
Battle started the second half timidly with Hollington pressing forward with a 'nothing to lose' attitude. However the away side were still pressing dangerously and more good passing from Andy Mills put Tim Walsh through to hit the bar from a tight angle, Alan Cowley missing out on the re-bound.
An injury to Rhys Bennett saw Pat Mamone fill in at left wing. Hollington continued to push, and after a period of pressure snatched one back from a corner, but this gave Battle a needed lift. After Nat Nunn came on for a hard working Tim Walsh, the visitors had a free-kick wide on the left. Pete Cooper delivered the ball and Nic Gooch rose to claim the forth. This seemed to bury Hollington and with Tim Nunn making key saves between the posts for Battle, the win was secured.
A solid and committed performance from all continued the Baptists one hundred percent start to the season.

BATTLING BAPTISTS BEAT BRIDGE
In a keenly contested contest at Claverham, the Baptist's second team narrowly edged this fixture by the odd goal.
Starting strongly, the home side enjoyed good possesion. A half chance came to Andy Oliver with barely 2 minutes gone, when he stuck out a toe to guide the ball into the side netting. Further chances were hard to come by as the strong and well organised Robertsbridge defence cancelled out our best attacking efforts.
Keeper Andy poulter was called into action as a Robertsbridge attacker found himself through on goal, only to be denied by Poulter's excellent save at his feet. This proved to be the only clear cut chance Robertsbridge created as despite increasing periods of possession, the Baptists keper and back four kept them at bay.
Deadlock was broken on 27 minutes. A ball out of defence by Owen Davies, found Jamie Crouch wide on the right. He ran on towards the bye-line and his low cross was met first time by Rob (goal a game) Usherwood who guided the ball into the net.
This seeemd to galvanise Robertsbridge into action. As they upped their game, the Baptists started to defend deeper, encouraging the opposition forward. On 44 minutes the oppositions skipper and central defender, Tim Hardy was allowed to run unchallenged from his own half to the edge of the Baptists penalty area. His low shot found the corner of the goal, past the despairing keepers dive.
At half time, the call went up for us to keep the ball in the manner we had during the first 25 minutes. To the teams credit they did that, creating some good half chances and restricting Robertsbridge to speculative shots from distance.
The Baptists regained the lead on 70 minutes. A free kick some 22 yards out and to the right of the goal was smashed into the wall by Zach Smith, who reacted quickest to the rebound with a trademark thunderbolt volley, which found the back of the net after a couple of deflections on the way trough. Barely a minute later and with the Baptists lacking concentration, a Robertsbridge attacker found himself with an open goal opportunity. His side foot shot was goal bound, only to see Eric Chapman come to the home sides rescue and clear off the line.
Robertsbridge were pushing hard for an equaliser now, but the Baptists defence, ably marshalled by the veterans Stuart Batchelor and Owen Davies held firm. Dave Mills, getting back to fitnss after his injury problems of last season, was also solid in everything he did. A very much leaner and fitter Jamie Crouch was doing his best to control the midfield alongside a tiring Brian Fitzgerlad.
The game should have been made safe on 41 minutes. A penalty was awarded after a clumsy foul on Dom Cooper-Fowler in the area. Jamie Crouch stepped up to convert but pulled his effort wide. Despite that miss, the baptists held firm untill the final whistle to claim all three points.
A good all round performance with a special mention for Will Foster, who on his full debut for the club, worked as hard as anyone on the day.
Next week we entertain Div 6 new boys West Hill Utd in the cup. Todays performance has given me some good selection problems to ponder over the next week.

BAPTISTS BATTLE BACK
I usually try to write the report in the style of a football report but today I just want to share how I feel.
It's such a long time since I've enjoyed a day of football like the one I've had today that I can't remember.
It didn't start well. Cranbrook had to change the venue to a field in Cranbrook where it was difficult to park and there were no chnaging facilities. Getting the squad to the pitch for 3pm proved awkward to say the least and preparation wasn't good. Expecting a cameo appearance from the subs bench, Pete Cooper found himself playing the whole game when Rhys arrived late. With two players cropping out on Friday, Matt Lee was thrust into the starting lineup and Natt Nunn had a very late call-up as stand-by sub.
On arrival, in contrast to our disorganised and tardy state, the Cranbrook team sat calmly by a goal listening attentively to their team talk. They started well and it became apparent that they are a strong team with several good players. We competed well for 5 minutes and then a few of our players began to feel the strain of the afternoon sun and Cranbrook took control, passing well and using their target men effectively.
So it wasn't a surprise when they took the lead though the nature of the goal was frustrating - a scramble in front of the line leading to a tap in for the attacker. Adam Gooch clipped the outside of the post and Rob jordan's free kicks from wide threatened Cranbrook but when their second goal came after a mix up at the back it looked like we might be down and out.
Last season that may have been the case, but we're a stronger team now and Pete Cooper pegged back a goal just before half time from the penalty spot. Andy Mills knocked a pass behind their defence and I sprinted onto it (well, as fast as I could anyway) managing to get my toe to the ball just before the centre half wiped me out with his tackle. It was like scoring for me and it just reminded me of my youthful football days when I could do that sort of thing with much more ease. We were all grateful to Pete who stepped up for the pressure kick and cooly sent the keeper the wrong way, giving us all a massive lift.
Cranbrook faded in the second half, mainly because we tightened up and kept up our competitive. I hit the post with a guided volley from 12 yards when Rob Jordan lobbed a high ball into the area and then Rhys Bennett came on in a change that probably won us the match. Adam Gooch was sent into attack and pretty soon he danced past defenders on the left wing, attacked the by-line and cut the ball back to the penalty spot where Tim Walsh met it with perfect timing and thundered in a thrilling equaliser. I know I'm biassed but Tim has always worked hard for the team and deserves to score more goals. I had as much pleasure in watching him score this one as I'd have had scoring it myself.
Although Cranbrook sent another player into thier attack, it was thier defence that now needed the extra support, with our defensive team of Paul Rook, Nic Gooch, Rob Jordan and Ollie Jeffs showing great strength and determination to cope with the extra workload.
Having joined the squad late we were fortunate to have the services of Natt Nunn when the hardworking Tim Walsh unfortunately went over on his ankle and needed to be replaced. Natt didn't look out of place, doing the right things holding the ball on the front line and bringing other players into the game.
By now the jaded Cranbrook defence were being taunted by the energetic movement and nippy runs of Adam Gooch who had preserved some energy having had a quiet game on the right side of midfield. His winner 5 minutes from time was a great goal. He jinxed through the defence and blasted the ball into a bulging net, sending his team into joyous rapture (not literally). What a goal!
In the final five minutes, having got our noses ahead, we took the liberty of blasting the ball anywhere just to waste a few more second without wasting energy - just the right methods in the circumstances where we had battled through the afternoon and come out on top.
There was contrast again in the moods of the squads after the game. I felt a tadge sorry for Cranbrook who played well and were on top for periods of the game, especially in the first half. But the attitude and commitment of my team was fantastic and as a team we never gave up. I feel so proud of our performance today and I'm revelling in the short term pleasure of this day. Thank You God for this day!

CHECK THE WEBSITE
Mainly for all the new players, I want to highlight the procedures for picking the teams as the week goes by. If everyone is supportive and understands what's expected of them, this procedure works efficiently.
BY SATURDAY (a week before match day) players will know their availability and will have told one of the two managers.
BY MONDAY EVENING - a squad is announced on the website detailing who is available and who can't play... Players are expected to check that we've got it right and tell us if it's wrong.
WEDNESDAY - the teams are (usually) picked following discussion between managers.
BY THURSDAY EVENING - the teams/squad for the 2 games are posted on the BBFC website. Players are expected to check the website, taking note of the details of the match ... meeting times etc.
If circumstances change betweeen Thursday and the match on Saturday, players must contact thier manager asap to allowing as much time as possible react. Players can do this by email, text or telephone call, but a common sense approach needs be taken...often emails are not checked or texts are not appropriate. However bad the news is, a phone call is usually the most appropriate and reliable way to communicate.
THANKS in advance for your helpfulness in assiting with the smooth running of our club. I sense it's going to be another great season!

BAPTISTS' CONTINUE IN GOAL VEIN
PEASMARSH & IDEN 1-3 BBFC I
Goals from Ollie Jeffs, Gary Walsh and Adam Gooch won the game for the Baptists in this hastily arranged pre-season friendly.
Jeffs opened the scoring with a firmly placed header after determined work from Tim Walsh had won a corner.
Kicking uphill at The Maltings the visitors defended strongly with Adam Staplehurst and Rob Jordan solid in the centre and Ollie Jeffs and Paul Rook giving great support down the flanks. The Baptists created further chances in the first half but Peasmarsh levelled on the stroke of half time when a great cross created mayhem and an unfortunate clash of players favoured the attacker who tapped into an open goal.
Making his debut for the first team, keeper Ray Pennells commanded his area and his long drop kick landed over the top of the Peasmarsh defense for gary Walsh to run on and lob the outcoming goalkeeper for 2-1.
Shortly afterwards Adam Gooch ran through from midfield and cooly rounded the helpless keeper to seal the win.
The season starts proper next weekend when the 1st team travel to Cranbrook and the 2nds entertain Sandhurst II at The Rec (Claverham isn't available yet).

BAPTIST HIT 5 IN DERBY GAME
BBFC I 5-3 BATTLE RANGERS
Two goals apiece from Alan Cowley and Gary Walsh and one from Adam Gooch gave Battle Baptist a win yesterday against Battle Rangers.
The first half was a goal fest with Gooch opening the scoring within a few moments of the start and Walsh lobbing the keeper for 2-0 before Rangers mounted a comeback taking a 3-2 lead. Cowley equalised with a cooly taken one-on-one and Walsh tapped in his second to give the Baptists a 4-3 half time lead.
Things calmed down in the second half and Cowley vollied in at a corner to make the margin more comfortable by the end of the game.
BBFC II 1-1 GUESTLING RANGERS
Earlier the seconds shared the spoils, having led for a large part of their game, Luke Barnes scoring from close range in the first half. Guestling equalised in the second half.

CRAZY CRICKET
20-20 cricket became 16-16 cricket last night in a match severely restricted by poor light and slippery footings.
The footballers won the toss and chose to bat, aiming to use the fast fading light at the end of a merky day to post a reasonable target. A promising start saw Mark Sztyber twice lamping the ball out of the ground, and supporting-opener Gary Walsh scoring through extra cover, before the innings fizzled out like a damp firework on a November evening, leaving a total of 77 for the visitors to defend.
The cricketers started their innings well and looked like they would reach the target easily until Andy Garlick took a fine catch that came down out of thick cloud off the bowling of Adam Staplehurst. Tighter bowling slowed the run rate and by the time Doug Cox trapped a second Battle cricketer lbw, the home side needed 12 runs from the last 2 overs.
Unfortunately no-one has yet invented a flashing, luminous ball so both batsmen and fielders struggled to guage the speed and direction of the slimey ball as it flew in all dierctions, at times resembling baseball rather than cricket.
It was left to ex-Battle Baptist captain and current cricket club first-teamer Dale Scowen, who seemed to combine X-Ray, ultra-sonic and infra red senses to stroke the three boundaries needed to guide the cricketers home to an 8 wicket victory.
At the end of the game, there was just about enough light for the fielding side to find their way back to the pavilion, where BBFC reflected on it's first exploration into cricket. Andy Mills was joyful not to quack with 2 runs in his first ever cricket match, Jamie Crouch was delighted to hit a four off his very first ball, Rich Ahsam realised that his bat has shrunk by the 6-inch margin that he was run-out, and Andy Poulter was pleased he didn't break another rib as the invisible ball peppered his rib cage without bouncing.
So the cricketers came out on top and the footballers learnt many things - not least of which was that these were excellent conditions for a game of footy.

GOOD DAY AT THE REC
Pre-season friendlies kicked off yesterday with both teams in action on the Rec.
BBFC I 2-2 EASTBOURNE DYNAMOS
The first team started strongly with a 2-2 draw against last season's Division 3 Champions.
Alan Cowley showed great determination under pressure to lob the Dynamos keeper and give his side a well-earned half time lead, before Adam Staplehurst stretched the advantage blasting in from close range. Eastbourne came back half way through the second half with 2 goals in 2 minutes and would have stolen a win if not for a brilliant save by Battle keeper Tim Nunn.
BBFC II 2-1 HERSTMONCEUX
The second team fielded several new players but it was the ever-dependable goalscorer Rob Usherwood who scored the opener only for Herstmonceux to equalise before half time. Newcomer Lee Boyd stole the show with a cooly taken winner, slipping the ball between keeper and post with just 2 minutes left on the clock.

CRICKET THIS TUESDAY
There are still one or two places left in the cricket team to play a Battle Cricket Club Midweek XI next Tuesday evening (17th Aug).
We start at St Georges's Meadow (behind the High Street in Battle) at 6pm.
Contact me immediately if you are interested in playing.
This is our first exploration into cricket and survival rather than victory is the aim, but it should be a great evening and hopefully we'll have plenty to talk about afterwards. Spectators welcome, though I wouldn't arrive late if I were you.

PRE-SEASON FIXTURES ARRANGED
We have arranged pre-season fixtures for both the 1st and 2nd teams on the 14th and 21st August. The 1st team play Eastbourne Dynamos on the 14th and Battle Rangers on the 21st. The second team play Herstmonceux on the 14th and Guestling Rangers on the 21st. All fixtures will be at home.
We will be asking you to confirm your availability for these two important week ends so that we can prepare two full squads.
Its also that time of year when we need to get you all signed up with the league and BBFC. I'll be chasing you over the next two weeks at training with signing on forms.
This is always an exciting time of year. We start with a clean sheet of paper, and both Gary Walsh and myself will be looking for everyone to impress and try to earn a starting slot in the first two squads of the season.

BLEEP TEST - A 'BLEEPING' SUCCESS
Thank you to all who took part in the bleep test so enthusiastically last night at training. Its a good test of endurance and we averaged a score of 9.4 for the 19 players who took part.....not bad for 2 weeks into pre-season. Kieron came out on top with a fantastic score of 13.6, closely followed by Adam Gooch at 12.9 and Timm Smith at 12.10.
My plan is to run the test again in 4 weeks time to see by how much you have improved. I'll also have it set up and ready to go next week for any of you that missed training this week and would like to give it a go. See you Wednesday.

CRICKET V BATTLE CC
Not wanting to distract from football during the week when pre-season starts but I've fixed us a game of cricket with Battle Cricket Club at George Meadow, Battle on Tuesday the 17th August.
My only problem is that I don't have a team yet!...slight snag.
If you are a cricketer and fancy agame let me know if you bat, bowl stump or like me just field, and i'll add your name to the squad.
Should be a great social night out!

PRE-SEASON TRAINING
Pre-Season training starts next Wednesday 30th June 6.30pm at Claverham.
With only 8 weeks to the start of the new season, both teams will be looking to bounce back from the last seasons dissapointment. It's important we have a good pre-season where everyone has the opportunity to work on stamina and fitness levels, so that we 'hit the ground running'!!
New players are always welcome. If you have friends, family or colleagues that are interested in trying out, please bring them along.
With the new Under 14 team joining us for training on the same night, these are exciting times for BBFC....I can't wait!!
