After 20
minutes of this friendly Christmas fixture, Hastonians were rampant and had
scored 2 goals. They were dominating every area of the field and Gary Wenham
had retired from central defence, following a bruising tackle that left the
6’4” tower in ruins. The team had to re-organise.
Suddenly
there came hope! Tom jinxed down the right, darting by several stranded
defenders, and unleashing a firmly struck cross that was side-footed home at
the back post by Dominic for 2-1.
The Division
3 side still played confidently, restoring their 2 goal advantage before
squandering an open-goal opportunity that would have made the score 4-1.
The
Baptists’ perseverance was rewarded on the stroke of half time, when Bryn
danced onto a pass and slotted home their 2nd to give encouragement
for the second half.
The game was
turned upside down in the second period, as it was the Baptists’ who controlled
the play. On 58 minutes, as the opponents’ six-yard box closely resembled a
pinball machine, midfield wizard Andy Mills lit up the faithful supporters’
eyes as he conjured up a 12 yard prod to level the scores.
Shortly
afterwards, Tom sealed victory with a solo dribble and near post shot that left
the Hastonians keeper rooted in the goalmouth mud.
To the
Hastonian hosts this was just a friendly. But to BBFC this is another
indication of the great improvements made during this first season. A superb
way to end 2004!
