In a competitive and bruising
encounter, Battle Baptists made it to the last 8 of the Lower Divisions Cup
thanks to a 75th minute winner.
The effervescent Dominic Fowler
opened the scoring on 20 minutes when an Owen Davies corner was met well in the
air by Gary Walsh whose headed attempt forced a defender to block on the goal
line only for Fowler to pounce on the rebound and poke the ball into the net.
For the remaining part of the half,
the Baptists struggled to keep possession as Peche Hill played excellent
football, passing the ball clinically on a wet and difficult playing surface.
Battle keeper Simon Cutler saved well when a Nick Ferguson shot found its way
through the otherwise solid defensive wall. Further well-organised and
industrious defending ensured that Battle went into the break still leading but
not before Doug Morris had replaced the in-form Gary Wenham when the
experienced defender enthusiastically over-stretched to make an important
clearance.
Soon after the break and all 3
Baptist substitutions had been made. Chris Mammone replaced the resilient
Adrian Gaylon in central midfield, then youngster Iain Henning came on for Dave
Mills after a typically strong forward run ended when the right midfielder
turned his ankle on the untrustworthy turf.
A firmly directed near post header by
Wayne Farrier deservedly equalised the scores for Peche Hill, despite the
valiant efforts of Paul Ford whose instinctive goal line header deflected into
the net off the crossbar.
Cutler made a stand in the Battle
goal, saving spectacularly to keep the fading home team in the game, but as
Peche Hill themselves made substitutions, it was the joyful churchman who took
the spoils. Henning was scythed down on the right wing and as the resulting
free kick was only partly cleared, veteran Walsh leapt high above the visitor’s
defence to secure the victory with a looping header over the stranded keeper.
Battle’s defence
held out defiantly for the remaining 15 minutes to earn a quarter-final tie
with Icklesham in the next round
