Battle Baptists
came back from 2 goals down, and can consider themselves hard done by in this
East Sussex League Division 4 contest.
Having opened up
the Punnetts Town defence twice in the first ten minutes only to miss the
opportunity to score, the Baptists fell behind, firstly to a cool Salik Abu
strike and then, following a period in which both teams had further chances, to
a 40th minute Matt Harper header.
Battle’s response
was immediate. Dave Mills suffered an injury to his back and had to be replaced
just before half time by super-sub Chris Mammone, who scored with his first
touch, after the industrious Dom Fowler had cut a path through the home defence
and squared the ball to Mammone in the 6-yard box.
This prompted a
Baptist revival, and straight from the second half kick off, Zion Man of the
Match Fowler again unlocked the Punnetts Town central defence with a clever
overhead flick that left midfielder Pete Cooper running in to level the scores
with a thunderous finish past the unprotected keeper.
Now playing full
of spirit and belief, the church based team went ahead with an opportunist goal
from their player manager Gary Walsh who lobbed the ball over the head of the
Punnetts Town goalkeeper from 35 yards, having pounced onto an awful
defence-splitting pass by the red-faced custodian.
Openings
continued to emerge at both ends with the Baptist defence using all their skill
and experience to keep out the speedy Punnetts Town strikers. Battle had a
chance to secure the win after another calamitous mistake in Town’s central
defence had gifted Fowler with a one-on-one run on goal, but the nippy forward
struck his shot at the thankful keeper.
As legs became
weary on a sodden surface, Punnetts Town replaced central defender and captain
Steve Ives with Sheehan Edmonds who pushed forward giving an extra man in
midfield. Soon afterwards, midfield talisman Ian Long found himself with time
and space, and let rip from 25 yards only to see his shot fly over the angle.
With 10 minutes
to play, Punnetts Town breeched the resolute Battle defence once more to
equalise. A goalmouth scramble finally fell to the feet of the grateful Abu who
swivelled for his second of the afternoon.
