On a bright but gusty afternoon on Battle Rec., A ruthless
display of finishing stunned Punnetts Town with three goals inside the first 10
minutes, effectively sealing the result in this East Sussex League Division 4
encounter.
Pete Cooper
started the scoring after just 2 minutes with a volleyed shot from 12 yards,
following a right-wing cross from home debutant Luke Miller.
As the Punnetts
Town defence were still contemplating responsibility for the first goal, Cooper
pounced again with a low, stinging shot that ‘Town keeper Steve Dodwell got a strong hand to but couldn’t keep from
agonisingly rolling across the goal line.
Zion
Man-of-the-Match Cooper turned provider in the 10th minute as Battle
again pressurised the bewildered visiting defence, this time down the left
flank. Cooper skilfully turned his marker and floated an inviting cross into
the area for skipper Andy Mills to head home form the penalty spot.
‘Town gradually
began to compose themselves and started to enjoy more possession, but the
damage was done. ‘Town’s influential midfielder Ian Long dropped deeper to
receive the ball and though his passes were accurate, the home defence stood
firm, guiding their opponents away from their goal.
In the second
half, the strong wind made it difficult for the Baptists to gain territory.
Punnetts Town applied more pressure but as a corner broke down, Battle
countered quickly, passing the ball to the feet of forward Gary Walsh who was
allowed to turn on the half way line and squeeze a pass to release substitute
Dom Fowler. Running free on goal, Fowler sidestepped the oncoming goalkeeper
and coolly finishing into an open net, quashing the hopes of a Punnetts Town
revival.
The visitors
worked hard for a consolation and were rewarded when a deep corner from the right
was headed back into the danger area for Sheehan Edmonds to deflect into the
net.
The result leaves
Punnetts Town pondering relegation but revitalises the Baptists who have a
promotion thriller next week when they entertain Red Lion at home (KO 3pm).
