AFTER THE GAME, there's a mens game (KO 3pm) and refreshements. Players, friends and family are then invited to the Squirrell to share some food with our visitors

Herstmonceux's changing rooms are being used for a cricket match so we'll meet at Battle Rec at 1:40pm like we did last week to get changed. Then drive over to Lime Cross where we can park right next to the pitch0
Just one change to the team that started so well against Magham Down last Saturday...Andy Moore comes into centre half to replace Stuart Batchelor.
I've filled all 5 subs spots. It's our last Division 2 game of the season and I want as many involved as possible.

Magham Down 2nds are playing immediately before our game against their 1st team and since the changing facilities at Magham are cramped, we'll meet at the RECREATIONAL GROUND, Battle at 2:15pm instead. After getting changed at the Rec we'll drive on to Magham Down to arrive there about 2:45pm. Kick Off is 3:30pm.

A win on Saturday will overtake Hastings Rangers in the final standings. A further win the following week will keep us ahead of Herstmonceux and give us a the mid table finish we deserve.
But Magham Down are always a tough side to beat and the game on Saturday will be no walk in the park. Another 7-0 win would give us a chance to finish 5th but that's unlikely given the close 1-0 contest when we beat Magham back in February.

The weather is a concern again since we're due some rain on Saturday but hopefully the pitch will be fit enough for us to play. We'll do everything we can to make the game go ahead.
We obviously want to finish the season strongly and look forward to September so Saturaday's visit of Northiam is interesting. Northiam are in the top half of the Division and the game will give a good indication of how far we've developed since last October when Northiam won 4-0.
I'd like to believe that we don't leak as many goals now and that we are a more resilient team, having proven that we can beat some excellent teams.

Rather than select 5 subs and have 2 players not playing, I've encouraged Richard to select them in his team. My feeling is that they will prefer to play rather than watch. This could be controvertial since someone in Richard's team will be displaced for thier last league game...it's a problem with no perfect solution and I pray for understanding and peace.
Herstmonceux are above us in the League but I know that if we play with the same competitive spirit that we had against Catsfield last weekend, we'll come out on top.
The weather is still causing problems but hopefully the pitch will be fit enough for us to play. No-one wants to miss football on a Saturday.

I've had an awkward time contemplating who to pick for this week. I really wish I could make everyone happy but there are only 11 positions to fill. Dale is back in the centre of midfield and this gave me a chance to pick Ollie in attack, where he played very well the last time we played Catsfield. In the end though I've gone for Ian because he's very quick and will cause more damage playing off the centre forward. As we saw last week, he's also got a hunger to score and that's what we want from our forwards.
Andy Moore is back from a 2 week absence and takes the spot in central defence. Max won't be with us next season so it's a chance to see how we can fair without him there.
Substitutes present me with a quandry. I can only play 3 but I want to keep 5 players involved in the squad (especially this weekend when the 2nd team have no game). I've picked 5 subs in the hope that whoever doesn't play will still prefer to be a part of the game, rather than being left out altogether...tell me if I'm wrong.

Training was collossal tonight ...I've really enjoyed these last 2 weeks. There's a sort of spike to our play and we are certainly looking more lively. The passing is improving and players are working much harder, having to adjust to the 'rules'.
Last week's game against Mayfield warrants some comment...
WE NEED TO KEEP OUR GOB SHUT!!!
I fully understand the circumstances under which we had to play (my own frustrations were evident) but the lesson to be learned is that our reaction helped no-one. We must understand that, on a regular basis in our league, we'll be tested in a similar way. Personally I should have left the field happy, having helped my team to win by scoring a hat-trick, but actually I allowed myself to be affected by the performance of others and the feeling wasn't good.
I can only try to do better this week and ask that the team tries likewise.
As far as substitutes are concerned, with the 2nds not playing, I wanted to name 5 subs to involve as many players as possible. But I'm acutely aware how disappointed players become when they don't get on the pitch so I've selected just three and I will try to give them a fair crack.
White Knight are a tough team to beat and after our 5-0 cup win they will be evn more eager to get back at us. I'm looking forward to another competitive performance that will keep up our good form.

The semi-final cup defeat last week has left me highly optimistic. Although we were beaten by the better side, I'm uplifted because we've enjoyed a great cup run beating two sides in a higher division. We have been able to raise our game to a higher standard and it's been a pleasure to play in these matches.
OK, when we compare our performance to Bexhill we were second best in several aspects, but this has given new ambition to raise the standard of our play even higher and keep on improving.
Reaching the semi-final has given us a taste of success and has left me craving more. Yet it's clear that to go that extra step we must work hard to develop our individual skills and team play.
At training tonight we demonstrated how much better we can play when we don't travel with the ball. As soon as they receive a pass, I insisted that players stopped, looked and passed the ball on. Suddenly the football we were playing looked effortless and efficient. Players started to work off the ball and move into spaces. And communication improved as players started to talk and listen to calls.
Such a simple thing and yet so effective, everyone looked like a better footballer and a better teamplayer.
I hope that we won't forget this on Saturday and that we will continue to practice this.
Mayfield are no pushovers. Since Christmas, they have continued to lose but just by the odd goal. They have their goalscorer Ross Davidson back and their only win of the season was against us, so they will believe they can win again.
For me, it's an interesting game because I'm keen to see who is learning from their experiences and who can continue to play at the level of our last two matches.

With Ian, Pete and Seb unavailable, Andy Moore steps up from a couple of appearances for the seconds to bolster our left footed options. Joe O'Neill keeps his place after an impressive display last time out while Adam and Dave S return.
This game is a huge match for our club. I appreciate I have not seen a lot of the first team recently due to my involvement with the 2nds over the last year and so I will be leaning on the senior players such as Dale, Andy and Alan for their input. Don't be deceived by Magham Down's League position. They've only lost one game this season. They are a strong side with quick and physical attackers, scoring 3 goals per game on average. I'm picking the squad like we'll play but the chances are very slim...
...shame because look who can play this weekend...it would be great to see Bry play for us again. At training on Wednesday he looked like he's lost none of his balance and skill. Also in the squad is young Joe Head - he's showing stacks of promise at training and I think he'll make a big impression on the Club in the future.
Dale is in charge for this game, ably assisted by Doug Turner who knows the ins and outs of referee and pitch management. Joe will ballboy as usual.

Keep praying for an end to this unceasing wet weather. We have a good strong squad this weekend with hardly anyone unavailable. This bodes well since this is a game that we would really need to win if we are to climb the table.
Most would agree that we let Herstmonceux off the hook when we played them before Christmas in a game that we should have won. We conceded 2 goals late in the end of the game and lost 3-2.
Having climbed to 5th from bottom in Division 2, we now have to start again as Little Common withdrew their team causing us to lose 3 points.

If you know there is a Saturday in January when you cannot play, you should have already made us aware of this.
When something crops up unexpectedly, please tell us IMMEDIATELY.

Recenty there has been a speight of players dropping out late in the week. This denies someone else the possibility of a game of football and it also leaves your team mates in the lurch.

All week I’ve been practising the art of understatement so all I want to say now is … hey let’s win.
Bulverhythe on a mid-December afternoon – it won’t be like Wembley in June. We can expect strong gusty winds blowing end to end, a leg-sapping soggy surface and brass monkey temperatures. It’s football captain, but not as we know it!

The weather may get the better of us this weekend. Battle has seen rain all day Thursday adding to the rain we've had earlier in the week. The pitch will be inspected on Friday and at best we'll delay the final decision until Saturday morning.
There's a possibiity that the fixture may be switched to Bexhill Road. But I'll continue to work on the basis that the game is on at the rec. Keep watching the website for news.
It's a shame if the game does get called off since I want to get the team back on the field asap. Andy has reported that he'd like another week before making a comeback appearance. Owen is still struggling and probably won't risk an appearance until the New Year. Paul Rook withdrew on Thursday.
One thing's for certain. If we do play, the conditions will not be like anything we've seen this season and will impact on the football played. Should be good fun!
Great for attackers ... tricky for defenders.

Tom's back this weekend...that's a great boost to us all. Unfortunately for me, it looks like I can't be his strike partner this week. After my 2 goals last week I was really looking forward to it but personal matters are taking a higher priority than football right now and I may not make the KO on Saturday. Steve Spicer will do a great job and I pray that this week he'll get the goal that he's been soooo close to in his last two games.
Adam and Ollie give the midfield a healthy look. Adam will be looking to repeat his performance against Wheatsheaf last week and Ollie's inclusion means that Dave Sitch can operate wide right where I believe he'll be at his most effective.
Pete Cooper also returns to his familiar left position and his pain killing injection will hopefully inspire a return to scoring ways.
I'm sticking mainly to the same defence for the time being, although Dave Mills gets a go at right back this week. The team must work hard to prevent goals being conceded this Saturday...I think we are all familiar with how we go about this and what we need to do to score goals at the other end of the pitch.
Our performance last week was brave and we almost took reward. We need to remember the Little Common catastrophe and make sure that it doesn't repeat,but with courage and grit, we can overpower Herstmonceux and overtake them in the League.

It’s great to see Dale back in the squad. Having selected Adam in midfiled last week, I’m sticking to my guns this week. Dave Sitch moves back into central midfield to partner Adam and Dave Mills comes into his usual right hand position.
We always do well against the teams at the top of the Division and it will inspire us that Wheatsheaf haven’t lost yet this year.
With Dale, Andy (Mills and Poulter) and Owen all getting close to fitness now there is plenty of competition for places but we must resist the temptation to go for personal achievement over team success. In midweek, we’ve seen England crash out of the European Championships and subsequently criticised for the lack of teamsmanship. We need maximum effort and total concentration.
Just to end on a light note…if you’re British when you go into the toilet and you’re British when you come out of the toilet, what are you when you’re IN the toilet……European.

There are several changes this week to the team that played last Saturday. Adam Staplehurst looked the part and so keeps the important central midfield place. Dave Sitch moves to a wide midfield role which, I believe is his best position. This displaces Dave Mills who will come on as a sub either to boost the attack or support the defence depending on the situation. Ian Rafiti deservedly keeps his place at left midfield and Pete starts as sub.
Tom isn't able to play this week though it's hoped that he will be fit again for the following week. Dale is also making good progress towards a return. Please continue to pray for the recovery of the players who have suffered from injury, including Owen, Andy, Dave Ndunduma, Stuart Batchelor and Adam Johnson.
We’ve learned big lessons from 2 weeks ago when Little Common got the better of us. Saturday gives us a chance to restore some normality to our game. The weather looks favourable so I'm looking forward to a great game of football.

I have thought long and hard throughout the week about the team for this weekend. I’ve listened to those people who have chosen to give me their opinion on last Saturday (…thanks for that)…and I’ve prayed about the matter of team selection. The result is the team that I’ve picked for Saturday.
I believe that we can learn big time from our disappointment last week and, although I could easily have made wholesale changes, I want to give the same team a chance to show improvement. I’m starting with the same team that ended the game against Little Common in the hope that it will continue the same level.

When I get back, I want to hear that we learned from last Saturday's mauling and that we don't make the same mistakes. Every player in the team needs to raise their performance level this week.

After the game, everyone is coming back to my house to watch a recording of the England game. Andy and Dale are organising the recording and 'refreshments' will be put on. You can also stay on and watch the rugby.
Team News: A couple of changes this week to give everyone some encouragement. No Ollie so Dave Sitch gets the number 8 shirt and Pete Cooper keeps the left back spot despite the return of Paul Ford who starts as sub. Paul Rook also starts on the bench so that Josh Howe's patience can be rewarded with a starting place.
The euphoria of last Saturday's win over Div 1 Hollington has still not totally died down and we'll need to maintain the same passion and commitment again this week. Make no mistake, Div 3 table-toppers Robertsbridge will consider themselves favourites to win this game. They have some excellent players, some of whom we know and some that are new to us.
We remember freescoring central midfielder Jethro Warren (Woody) from great contests we had with Hastings Rangers two years ago, and the towering centre half Bud Mewett, a modern day Goliath. Both these are fine players and have played at County level. Also young whippersnapper and maths graduate Tom Augarde is a talented forward who scores goals. We'll have to keep him quiet if we are to upset the form book again and win through to the next round.
For me personally, it's a bit of a school re-union ...I used to go to school with most of the opposition!!!
