A classic game of
two halves ended with the Baptists earning a draw away at Travaux.
The home side
used their superior knowledge of the conditions to good effect early on and
really should have taken the lead in the second minute when they broke through
on goal but the striker sliced his shot horribly wide.
Battle looked to
get into the game and only some dubious offside decisions stopped first Dom
Fowler and then Gary Walsh from being released through the middle. Paul Ford
managed to break through on the quarter hour and his shot from the edge of the
area curled just wide. Fowler and Walsh then combined well again before Walsh
found the side netting from a tight angle.
With the men in
orange starting to create a few chances, they were hit by a classic counter
attack. With men pressed forward for a corner the Battle side were light at the
back as Travaux broke forward quickly. The ball was worked well across the box
and the striker had the simple task of knocking the ball in.
This invigorated
Travaux, who attacked well with gusto and no little skill. A long shot from the
edge of the box bounced awkwardly in front of goal and Simon Cutler did well to
tip it round the post. Then out of the blue the away side equalised. A long
goal kick from Cutler was missed by both the Travaux defence and keeper,
leaving Fowler with the simple task of rolling the ball in from eight yards.
Travaux hit back
and had a few cracks at the Battle goal from distance. Most went comfortably
over but just before half time they made it 2-1. The Baptists were a man short
with Doug Morris receiving treatment when Travaux drove a twenty-five yard
effort past Cutler.
The second half
started with Adrian Gaylon coming on for the injured Morris, who retired with
an eye injury. After an even start to the half Travaux started to look the more
adventurous side and were getting through to the Battle defence on regular
intervals. The Baptists stuck at it though and around the hour mark started to
win back possession and control of the game. The equaliser combined this
determination with genuine quality to produce a second for Fowler. Walsh won
the ball superbly down the right hand side before releasing Pete Cooper. The stand-in
skipper whipped a first time ball to the far post where Fowler watched it all
the way before burying a bullet header low past the keeper.
Travaux looked to
reclaim their lead and nearly got it when Cutler kicked poorly having claimed a
cross and was stranded on the edge of his area. However the incoming attempted
lob was not high enough and he plucked it out of the air. The home side then
found space on their right but the striker dragged his shot just wide.
The last ten
minutes were all Battle as first Fowler broke down the left before shooting
just wide, then Cooper beat four men as he took the ball from his own half to
the Travaux penalty area before playing in Ford whose shot flew wide. Walsh
then got free in the box and saw his shot blocked out for a corner, which was
well cleared by the home defence.
The final whistle
brought about a fair result, with Travaux edging the first half and the
Baptists coming back well in the second.
