Seven quality goals lit up the first ever encounter between the two church-sponsored Clubs as a courageous Battle Baptist side came back from 3-1 down to dramatically win this entertaining K & P Motoring World Challenge Cup 2nd round tie in the second minute of extra time.

It was Eastbourne team that inflicted the first blow. Injury to Dominic Fowler forced an early change to the unsettled visitors and on 25 minutes, a Victoria striker resisted two solid defensive tackles, accurately drilling the lose ball low into the left-hand corner of the Battle goal from just outside the area. Great goal!

Battle drew level 10 minutes later, when an Owen Davies corner was nodded down by substitute Gary Walsh and centre half Doug Morris swivelled on the 6-yard line to crack home the deserved equaliser.

Any tactical half time discussions were blown apart just one minute after the restart, when the Battle defence parted like the Red Sea enabling the Victoria player to carefully aim his 18-yard shot into the top corner for 2-1…another great goal!

Both teams were now working hard to establish midfield superiority and Victoria appeared to seal their win on 63 minutes when Battle captain Andy Mills was the victim of a tackle that resembled that of rugby front row surge. This enabled his opponent to release a team-mate who scorched down the right-wing, cleverly cut inside and smashed a thunderbolt over the left shoulder of the stunned Simon Cutler in goal…yet another superb strike that dented the hopes of the aggrieved Battle players.

Not to be defeated, Battle showed resilient character, clawing back a goal within 5 minutes when the talented Tom Frere-Smith jinxed through the bewildered home defence to shoot narrowly inside the post for 3-2.

On low energy levels, Battle played with great spirit and determination. Keeper Simon Cutler made two great saves, one of which happily rebounded off a post into his welcoming arms. At the other end Darrell Hartley sliced a great effort round the post and Pat Mammone worked tirelessly breaking through the home defence on penetrating runs. Peter Cooper made great contributions when he came on to play left midfield and an unfortunate back injury forced Doug Morris to give way to Gary Wenham, who was sent up into attack in a desperate effort to level the scores.

Bang on the stroke of 90 minutes, the loyal visiting fans were sent into raptures, as Cooper, Walsh, Mammone and Frere-Smith were all involved in a move down the left wing that saw the ball sweep across the penalty area into the path of express train Dave Mills, whose right-footed rifle-blast from 15 yards blew away the back of the net shattering the hearts of the home team and sending the tie into extra time.

With Battle now feeling confident and the home side deflated, the game was won just moments into the extended period, when Frere-Smith gave an action replay of his earlier goal, trickily side-stepping defenders and firing his shot across the despairing keeper.

Injury to Hartley left Battle with only 10 effective men, and the drama faded as players ran out of reserves. Battle had overturned keen Victoria.
