Battle notched up their first ever victory in a cup match with a scrappy win over Wadhurst. Again
the Baptists started strongly, with Andy going on a good run after five minutes
before being stopped short by the covering defender. Gary Walsh then almost put
the Oranges ahead when he flung himself at a deep corner only to see his effort
go wide. On the quarter hour mark Walsh was seemingly pushed on the edge of the
area but the referee was not impressed by his appeals, to the extent where he
did a rather poor impersonation of the said ‘dive’ top make his point! A minute
later Dave cut in down the right hand side and shot into the side netting. On
twenty minutes, Pete picked up the ball on the halfway line and beat three
defenders before seeing his shot blocked well by the visiting keeper. On the
half hour mark the referee then confused all twenty-two players and the
watching fans when he allowed a substitution to take place while the ball was
in play. Gary Wenham then found himself free at the far post after a corner was
played in but he hit his volley high and wide. Then Walsh had a shot parried
and Mike just failed to get on the end of it. After good work by Walsh, Mike
fired a shot straight at the keeper before on forty-seven minutes Dave burst
into the box and finished past the keeper.
The second half started with the Baptists
still buoyant following their late opener. Less than five minutes in and it was
chaos in the Wadhurst box as Gary Williams headed a corner back into the mix
and neither Pete nor Gary Walsh could force it in. The referee was at it again
moments later when he took a drop ball himself to determine which side should
receive possession following an accidental collision. Just before the hour
mark, Pete almost played himself in when the ball ran to Mike and his shot was
a comfortable save for the keeper. Paul came on for Mike and Doug came on for
Adrian before Dave again did good work down the right hand side and stung the
palms of the keeper. The game was sealed with less than five minutes to go when
Gary Walsh burst down the right and calmly slotted the ball past the goalkeeper.
The final few minutes passed without much incident as both sides knew the game
was well won by the home side.
